I'm an officer in the military, so I'd say I'm on the right path.

First step is probably to look at your local congresspeople and your mayor and see how they got there, since you'll probably need to serve in elected office first.
If I was going to run for office where I was, I'd look for ways to serve the community like they did in a way that I could get recognition for.
Military service is probably a good start, but people aren't just going to elect a veteran because he runs for office. When you're out of the service, look for opportunities in your locality to help people in a way that aligns with your political views.
Like, if you are a very religious right winger, you could try to become a pastor (I don't know what your educational background is) and be active in creating church programs for your community. If you're a left-winger, you could look at doing other types of charity work, like at HIV/AIDS prevention center.
