Hey everyone, I'm looking at really delving into research on proto-indo-european languages and similar linguistic origins, so if anyone has any good sources for me (books, articles, etc) I'd be super appreciative.

Comparative Indo-European Linguistics, Robert S. P. Beekes
Indo-European Language and Culture, Benjamin W. Fortson
From Proto-Indo-European to Proto-Germanic, Donald Ringe
New Comparative Grammar of Latin and Greek, Andrew Sihler

You can find pdfs of them all on libgen.io

I suggest reading Beekes first since it also has a few chapters introducting historical linguistics.

Look into the Basque language. Proto-European and unrelated to any living language today. Might give some insight into older or less influenced Indo-European languages

~60% of the language is borrowed words from neighbors, but the structure remains Romance. I can totally see what you mean by how just listening to it makes it seem totally unrelated to your mother tongue.

Romanian is a Romance language that ended up borrowing a majority of its vocabulary from Slavs
like English and French really

Author: Julius Pokorny
Booooook: Indogermanisches etymologisches Wörterbuch

Basically an exhaustive listing of words of PIE origin, showing cognates among different IE languages and their roots and original meanings.

It's probably the most authoritative thing out there when it comes to etymology. You can find English (and other) translations.

what the other guys said, its also the last eastern romance language as opposed to western romance languages you know. try studying some language that is not actually from europe and you will realize just how similar romanian is to italian, france or spanish.
