Apartheid was a thing before the red scare.
As in it wasn't instant but it was built up over years where eventually the Np enacted the Apartheid laws after winning the election due to the messed up voting distribution.

Whereas in reality the west was AGAINST South Africa and the US anti-apartheid campaign started in the mid 70s and had fuck all to do with communism.

Exactly, and with the communists gone, there was an opportunity to transition to majority rule, without any danger of communist infiltration. And that's what it happened.
Nixon and Reagan were cool with apartheid. I don't give a fuck if a democrat controlled congress voted a boycott. Nor if students marched against it in campus. Foreign policy is run by the executive, and during most of the 70s and 80s the US might not have approved it but at least it was the lesser evil. And so it was for Maggie's UK. Both countries preferred it to the possibility of having ANC in power while the commies were still around, and this was during the Cold War final push.
The regime didn't decide to open right when the USSR collapsed just because. Geopolitics trumps coincidence. You all should know this if you pretend to contribute to this board.

The ANC was a leftist movement supported by the socialist bloc, and everyone around southafrica (Angola, Mozambique, Zimbabwe/Rhodesia) was in a particular situation: Cuban intervention in Angola in support of the local pro-socialist regime against the UNITA contra financed and supported by South Africa, commie infiltration in Mozambique and Zimbabwe removing whitey colonial imperialism from their home clay.
The whole southern tip of Africa, with its important agricultural and natural resources was a hot point of the bigger game of the Cold War. Ofc the West wouldn't openly support South Africa because muh narrative of freedom and democracy, the city upon a hill, memes and etc and public opinion, but you know when it came down to support socialists/mates of the socialist bloc or dictators/fascist-racist regimes anywhere in the World, the West always had its priorities very clearly established.
