They knew they would get help from the UK and France. Also they underestimated the German military and thought the war would only take a few months.

They had one of the strongest armies before the war, their cavalry wielding panzer-cutting laser sabers. Why else do you think the Poles would use a cavalry charge against German tanks?
Fortunately the German genius prevailed. they heroically defeating the superior Polish forces.
