Why did men stop wearing hats?
>>
Because they felt when people were driving the first cars.
>>
Because of the *tips fedora* meme, people felt ashamed to wear them

Probably because people actually went outside more.

Hats were meant to protect you from wind, dust, cold, sun. Now that everyone has cars, this isnt necessary anymore.
Basically the popularization of the personal car removed the practical need for hats.

>hygiene
In the 20th century there is a greater emphasis on hygiene. In the 50's, men washed their hair once a week at most, and washing more was considered a sissy feminine thing. So you needed a hat to keep the dust and dirt and just random floaties in the air away.

>hair and fashion
Ties in with the hygiene thing. Basically when men started washing their hair more, it became fashionable to have more elaborate hairstyles. Putting a hat on your head ruins your hairstyle, so hats had to go.
Back in the 50s if you didn't wear a hat you'd be extravagant in a way, a little rebel. Now its the opposite. Hats are something of a quirk, and a fashion statement.

The first cars needed you to wear a hat.

And the later cars didn't. I don't see how your post argues mine, or answers the OP.

Sorry but this is a stupid idea. It's just an NPR host's dad's opinion. State troopers, you know guys that drive in squad cars all day, are generally required to wear their hat upon exiting their vehicle. It has to do with this great feature hats have, they can be removed.

They only wear them because they are required to. Its part of their uniform.
People who aren't required to, don't, because it gets in the way. The car isn't high enough, the head rest fucks with the hat, and when you are traveling in a car you don't need a hat in the first place.
Since people only ever walk very short distances, carrying a hat isn't worth it, so people don't wear hats.

Equallity.

Good hair became more fashionable.

It's not like nobody wears hats, it's just you don't wear one when you're trying to look your best.
