In Sikhism, they believe (in varying degrees based on how traditional one is) that everything is equal, from a human, to a dog, to a mouse, they all deserve life and to be treated with respect. If killing must be done, whether for self defense or food, it must be done swiftly to minimize pain, which is the reason they never eat halal or kosher meats.
