Compromise was impossible in 1948. The Husseni's had incensed the Palestinians to the point of hysteria. Bloody, nationalistic fervor also held a grip on the Zionists.
The Arabs nations didn't want to go to war. They knew they were out gunned and poorly trained. But the average man on the street was screaming for it. They were afraid of being deposed if they didn't go to war. Which is ironic because they were deposed for their failure.
There is no compromise here. The Jews want an ethno-nationalist state in heart of Dar-Al-Islam. Both have extreme hostility towards outsiders. It was never going to work out well.
I do agree with Benny Morris. Ben-Gurion should have expelled all of the Arabs in Israel, rather than just the ones the IDF thought were a threat. It would have stablized the country for generations.
