You have a 12yo brother and you want to get him into history. How would you describe the Renaissance and Humanism to him in, let's say, two paragraphs, without making it an absolute borefest? How can you explain to a kid things lke the revival of interest towards platonism, the classical canon of beauty, hermeticism or mention great people like Rabelais, Copernicus, Ficino, Francis Bacon, Giordano Bruno, Michelangelo, DaVinci without making it an absolute borefest? I

know people like us had immense curiosity and devoured a lot of information but times change and now they might not have enough time or attention for that. How would you guys explain this period?

lol he's gonna hate you

find cool movies or games or comics related to *historical period* and let them act as a gateway

Honestly? Mass media, even if it's not historically accurate. The Borgias, Assassin's Creed, etc.

Nobody started liking history by reading a textbook. Age of Empires, Civ or Braveheart got you to start reading kiddie books, which got you into reading a textbook. Mass Media may not be historically accurate, but it helps cultivate an early and healthy interest in history. If he likes it he'll keep liking history long after he knows what's wrong with whatever entry level media got him into it.

I agree. Really entry level stuff is great for cultivating interest. I would recommend Civ. Because of Civ, I don't even read fiction any more, just history texts.

I would start with cave drawings and venus figurines

Tell him that the Renaissance is a meme created by anti-Christian shitposters trying to discredit the medieval era. 12 year olds love memes.
