I really do get sad thinking about how shit the Native Americans had it, there are natives cultures existing in the world today that deserve that kind of oppression, but not the Red Indians.
>>
I oftentimes yearn at the events wherein, if it weren't for a set few decisions, all basically would have been right.

If in the events leading to British North America's war for independence, if some manner of representation in parliament, if really, the tensions and events leading to it had been handled better the US would be part of a rather badass and glorious Anglo Commonwealth, and while I'll happy for the ideas that the US put as a model to much of the rest of the world, it's a shame when looked at it in such a manner.

I also cannot shake the feeling that if the German Empire had only conducted their war differently, they'd be wholly justified. British totally fucked over and stole from the Ottomans preemptively, Austria was guilty of pushing for terms that would lead to war, but hey, they weren't the ones that killed the Archduke. Looking at the whole of WW1 it's just sad to see where everyone fucked up. If the German Empire had kept the sensibility that it has developed under Bismarck, Communism in Europe would never have gone to the extent it would have, and the whole next wars were a chain of folk trying to make sense of their world and do what they thought they had to to stop the next great evil.

The Great War. The world was not ready for modern warfare. It was a 20th century war fought by 19th century men.
I almost cried the first time I read about the Christmas truce, knowing that didn't mean a happy ending like in a film, no, the war would go on for years and it would achieve nothing. The world didn't become a better place after it, but it would not be the same either.

WW1. I won't say the war was entirely pointless but the thought of young boys being sent into trenches to die in the mud, being obliterated by explosives, having to sacrifice their friends to take the scarce supply of unbroken gasmasks. It just fucks with me that beyond the dead, there were survivors having to live experiencing that shit. When I was in middleschool there was this veteran talking about his experiences and halfway his story he broke down in tears.

Battle of Shanghai makes me tear up, specifically Sihang Warehouse. Some 400 brave chinamen held out for days against the full brunt of a Japanese assault with armored cars, artillery and aircraft, all within view of the foreign embassies, proving that China was finally willing to fight in a desperate attempt to source western aid.

Many chinese troops were able to evacuate to Nanking due to the Sihang heroes, but on a somber note, the overall battle was a tremendous disaster. China had sent in nearly every single one of its only western-tier divisions (trained and armed by Germany) to prove it's determination, and they were wiped out, leaving China with pretty much nothing, and worse still, their brave stand was mostly ignored by the west and they had to fight on their own for 4 more years.

I would get crucified on /v/ for saying this but the casual WW1 setting of the new Battlefield game irks me. .

Just imagining some teenager sitting in his room being gleeful at mustard gassing people when 100 years ago it would be people just like him on the receiving end.

I wouldn't say that WW1 is somehow off limits or that it isn't hypocritical of me to be fine with other eras of warfare being game-ified,-

but the idea that a bunch of people excitedly watched the dubstep-remix trailer of soldiers dying on the western front and will have their perceptions of the war distorted by a toy gets to me.

This.

I don't know, maybe I'm just too naive and biased with the whole WAR OF HEROES mentality that WW2 had.

Despite the heroics of the second world war making me enjoy depictions of those conflicts, I'm too stuck in the realization that there was no glorious charge or sieging of the enemy city, no relief or true victory. These were just 18 year old kids coming to terms with the realization that their leaders were going to make them charge in a nice, neat line at a gun that could, and would, proceed to kill every last one of them in seconds.

It's so fucked up, god damn it.
>>
>>1102687
>These were just 18 year old kids coming to terms with the realization that their leaders were going to make them charge in a nice, neat line at a gun that could, and would, proceed to kill every last one of them in seconds.

WW1 was hell, but this is a gross simplification of what even the Western front was like, let alone all the other fronts of the war.

I think there's plenty to be sad about without needing to invoke the "lions led by donkeys" meme or the "foolish generals ordering human wave assaults because they didn't understand how machine guns and artillery work" meme

Well for me
-WW1 just a pointless waste of life shitfest.
-Conquest of Persia by the arabs.
-Boer war- pointless stupid shit but the Boers really should of stayed in South Africa with the British.
-30 years war- So much death over shitty religious fight.

Love
Defeat of Napoleon (he was a warmonger and scumbag tyrant.)
Conquest of the new world by Spain- Red skins arn't as innocent or civilized as you might think, the aztecs were called the cannibal kingdom for a reason. (however the spread of diseases ect. was indeed a sad thing.)
Destruction of the Byzantines- I know there are plenty of fanboys but the empire had so much bickering and corruption it is just a shame it wasn't replaced with something better.

Same here, but I also feel bad because it was the end of the Edwardian Era. All that optimism, progress, trade, destroyed in just 4 years. We only just returned to 1914 levels of trade a few years ago, that's how destructive WWI was. Imagine how advanced the world would be without it.

This, and especially the thought of an entire people's connection to its own culture and history being wiped away by something like the Cultural Revolution. The conscious way the Maoists wiped out tradition and any kind of organic connection to China's incredibly rich history is tragic, and then Mao dies and in less than a generation nobody gives a fuck about communism and China just gets flooded with globalist-capitalist "culture" and becomes the world's factory of cheap shit. Even leaders wept on its eve. The war came upon them almost as an unstoppable force, a product of its times. It was the violent sum of of mundane detail that otherwise would have lost its meaning to history if it hadn't cumulated so perfectly to war. And it would be the death of meaning after the war was over.

Then, in the only irony so massive that we could thereafter arrive to post modernism: Men dredged meaning from death only 10 years later, so that they could put war upon it this time.

That shit was like giving philosophy the closest thing to a double tap.

The notion of Hitler being increasing reliant on his own delusion to shield himself from reality, before being suddenly, finally and utterly broken when inescapably confronted with the sheer depths of his failure, raging impotently at everyone around him before finally turning all of his pent up hate inward and swallowing his PPK fills me a warm, fuzzy feeling.

It's very important to me that he realised that before the end, it would have been a great injustice if he died without first seeing all he wrought and then some brought to smoking ruins.

The best part is, Europe is basically America now when it comes to culture. You guys make American music, wear American style clothes, speak English because of America, didn't collapse into chaos like the Middle East after WWII because of America.

You all know American music and movies and books and TV shows.

All Europeans have is history of their dead glory. And even that is basically "We got rich because we shot and raped a bunch of people who didn't have guns lol"

Europeans have such an outdated idea of what culture is, it's so cute, watching your entire continent move backwards.

White people are basically dodos. Their societies grew too comfortable and they lost their edge. For a while, the political/military apparatus they'd built up over the past half-millennia continued to safeguard the increasingly soft inner culture, but that apparatus draws membership from this culture, so eventually the rot spread there too. Right now the whole edifice is collapsing. White people will be a bizarre footnote in future history books; the race that came from nowhere, soared to world domination, then simply lost the will to continue existing.

I see (what I assume) to be a lot of Euros lamenting WWI in this thread. To me, the Civil War is the American equivalent. Yes we were in WWI, but it didn't fuck up our country for generations. Quite the opposite.
The Civil War though....Jesus. Watch the Ken Burns' doc if you haven't on Netflix. I tear up many times every time I watch it. The thought of my ancestors (Irish immigrants) being used as cannon fodder by both sides, all of their dreams and hopes in their new country dashed away in an instant....cripplingly depressing. Not that guy, but I wrote a dissertation about Granada and he's quite right.

The Nazarids developed their economy into a luxury export-driven economy aimed at mostly Christian markets. They lacked the natural fertility that other Andalusian cities which drew from the Guadalquivir. So they came up with an ingenious and well-coordinated system of irrigation and state programs to make the best of the quite inhospitable mountainous landscape. The Nazarids pretty much transformed Granada from the poorest Andalusian taifa into one of the most urbanised and productive regions of Iberia in a few generations.

They were doomed nonetheless. Rival sugar plantations were being started by Italian merchants across the Mediterranean and generally their economic worth was being overshadowed by a drastically changing European world. The Spanish were only getting more zealous than less and eventually conquered by the Catholic Monarchs.

What's really tragic is that the ensuing rebellions, forced conversions, emigration and expulsions permanently fucked up the region beyond repair. Spanish peasant settlers from up north, who moved into now severely depopulated and formerly productive areas like the Alpujarras, were completely out of their depth. Their feudal model was completely unsuited to the local climate and geography, in stark contrast to the fine-tuned system the Granadans had used.

The region has been one of the poorest and most depopulated in Spain ever since, with hundreds of derelict Nazarid aquaducts, communal farmsteads, reservoirs and waterwheels littering the landscape. Only the Alhambra gives us a glimpse of what had been.

At least americans know that their country was a mixture of european colonies, I don't even know what I am (plus the "illyrian" thing sounds like propaganda).
This other thread >>1117199 suggests that we were a group of tiny, isolated mountain tribes of the area and that we survived roman expansion and slavic migrations as an ethnic group thanks to that (I guess the ottoman invasion came a bit too late to fully purge or overwhelm our ethnicity, so that one may not count), but I'm still taking it with a grain of salt.

The worst thing is that I've always been into history since childhood, so not knowing about my identity drives me mad and the idea that believing that I'm either illyrian or an autoctonous balkan is a 50-50 risk of falling for a lie is one paranoia I'll never get rid of.
And even if I am an autoctonous balkan, what about it? What armors and weapons did we use, IF we ever went to war during pre-medieval age? Did we have bronze helmets or did we wear fur caps? Were we a society of raiders, hunters, farmers or what? I know I sound autistic, but I need to "satiate" this thirst of mine.

Which is why tv, music and clothing suck so much nowadays. Seriously, fuck Focus channel. But I'll give you one point about WWII, thank you for rescuing us at the very last moment so that you could profit from rebuilding after all the destruction instead of coming in earlier.

>Europeans have such an outdated idea of what culture is, it's so cute, watching your entire continent move backwards
