After rouble fell twice I couldn't tour across Europe any longer and switched to inter-Russian tourism. Old cities are still discernable, as do traditional cultural regions, especially if natives are present. Kazan is GOAT, for example.

Part of it had to do with the semi-free movement of serfs after Ivan Grozny's law was abolished (or just on the specific day where serfs could leave and go wherever before the law was abolished). Sure some 2 centuries old buildings are left to collapse wedged between two restored building right on one of central streets of the city, and part of Kazan over the Kazanka is some Nouveau Commiebloque district, but it looked way better than, say, Moscow eastern suburbs.
