Mari, Syria, 3rd millenium BC
The planned city was founded ca. 2900 BC by Sumerians near the Euphrates, connected to the river by an artificial canal.
One of the most important centers of trade in Western Mesopotamia for over a thousand years, the city had a population of 40,000 at its peak - possibly the largest city in the world in 2400 BC.
The city was destroyed by Sargon of Akkad in the 23rd century BC. The reestablished city with an Akkadian ruling class lasted until the 18th century BC, when it was destroyed by Hammurabi, never to be rebuilt in its former glory.
