Stalin wasn't particularly well liked from within the party, he just got in good with Lenin and then on his deathbed Lenin realized what a horrible mistake he made.
Bukharin was more or less what consolidated the control for Stalin after that in favour of Trotsky, but of course Stalin betrayed the poor darling of the party once no one could stop him anymore.
