Jews do share a common israelite ancestry, but it is very diluted at this point.

Well, try to give an account of where a race came from. It's not exactly easy to do scientifically. The Hebrews came to be a race, and as to our origin, our myth is that we're all descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and thus involved in an eternal covenant with god. Remember from Genesis, Israel was the name given to Jacob after he wrestled with an angel. Israelite is literally "child of Israel". There's not much evidence as to the truth of these stories, but these were the stories. By not proselytizing and being exclusionary and hyper-traditional for a very, very long time, the knot between race and religion became so tight that overwhelming secularism and interbreeding have not untied it, and could not untie it for another very, very long time, in spite of loosening it substantially.
It's worth noting the changes in terminology make it somewhat more of a confusing picture, going from Israelite and Hebrew to Jew for reasons not necessary to articulate in this post.

An ancestral religion is something you are born into, as opposed to universal religions that are always going out of their way to get more proselytes.

Judaism, like Hinduism, is an ancestral religion.

Same thing with native Americans and Romani people. They are so socially isolated for one reason or another that their culture, religion become synonymous with their race.
