Did they write about their proselytizing methods? How did they get so many influential African Americans to adhere to such a warped version of Islam? It just seems like Scientology or Nazism for black people.

Some middle eastern guy was in black communities decades before the civil rights movement and told them about a religion that sounded familiar and that also empowered them. (people forget a third of African slaves were Muslim or Islamic all you influenced)
It also is influenced by the Afroasiatic movements that formed in reaction the the mass support/membership of the Ku Klux Klan and White Supremacy pervading everywhere.

ugh, never has a post been so wrong.
Not only were more than 2/3rds of slaves brought from Africa Muslim, no Muslims triggered the Islamic movement in the African American community.
The African American community learned that their ancestors were Muslim, and developed an idea that mixed with the racism of black people at the time. Everyone was racist, but African American racism was reactionary to white racism.
As much as we want to believe Blacks and Whites are 2 seperate cultures, they are very similar. Because whites believed blacks were inferior, racist blacks picked up that idea, believing THEY were superior. They liked the idea of what NoI was claiming.
Until they actually met Muslims and Muslims were like "wtf r u tlkin bout?" But Islam still had an appeal because the prophet Muhammad said "There is no difference between a black man and white man in the eyes of God." and Islam was still the religion of their ancestors.

It was not 2/3rds and you literally said just about exactly what I said.

Who was it? Wutang clan and Muhammed Ali? Not exactly judged by their intellect.
The media tried to demonize Malcolm X, and with demonization of literally anyone you're going to find many people attracted to their ideas (see: Donald John Trump

Imagine that you are a neckbeard that normies shit on day in and day out. One day, somebody tells you a story where neckbeards were actually the original god-emperors of man, and that the normies who torment you are actually twisted, deformed versions of neckbeards.

Not the person to whom you responded, but the "being" to which we refer as "Neanderthal" because of the locality of first discovery of remains, is a member of an ancestral breed of humans, and it "lives on" in the dna of caucasian and a number of asiatic peoples today. It is a past relative, and there is conclusive proof in modern dna study.
Very few sapien sapiens are direct, unfiltered descendants of the homo sapien of 100k ya. We're all mutts, although some breeds weren't quite so physically diverse 30k ya.

And those were not pure, but mutts of their own predecessors. Homo sapien didn't pop into existence in a vacuum.
