Given their rate of development, would the former Eastern Bloc states really be poorer if capitalism had not be forced on them?

If anything, the destruction of socialism seems to have hampered their economic growth

Americans will never admit that the Russians hate them for forcing Neo-Liberalism on them.
>>
>>1036438
Nothing was forced on them, it was will of people.
Eastern bloc was going through recession by the end of 80's and it wasnt going to get better.
Find some map that has years up to present and see for yourself how much it has grew.

The stats are accurate?

>stats only up to 2002

Commies are funny.

A referendum on the future of the Soviet Union was held on 17 March 1991. The question put to voters was:

"Do you consider necessary the preservation of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics as a renewed federation of equal sovereign republics in which the rights and freedom of an individual of any nationality will be fully guaranteed?"

Yes - 77.85%
No - 22.15%
Turnout - 80.03%

The referendum's question was approved by nearly 70% of voters in all nine republics that took part.

>in all nine republics

I note that you neglected to mention that all the parts of the Comecon that weren't shitholes had already left.

Half of the countries involved were -stans that were kicked out of the Russian Federation because they cost more than they were worth.

>Although the vote was boycotted by the authorities in Armenia, Estonia, Georgia (though not the breakaway province of Abkhazia, where the result was over 98% in favour,[3] and in South Ossetia),[4] Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova (though not Transnistria or Gagauzia)

fucking lol good thing congo wasnt part of USSR

This graph a shit, Ivan

All countries apart from Russia seems to have stagnated already before the fall of Communism, reaching past their communist-era economy shortly after the downfall.
And none should care about what the Russians think about their economy as they only are happy when they are oppressing someone else no matter how bad the economy is.

As always it is hard to tell what would have happenend if things were different.

My opinion: The strucutral reforms a country and its industries has to go through often sets back the competetiveness of their companies on an international scale. They would have to protect and grow their industries in a closed off economy, before they could compete with the west in knowledge, and the east in cheap labor and efficiency. However, the EU has provided less barriers in international trade between the eastern block and the western part of EU. This has resulted in somewhat more demand and outsourcing from western EU towards eastern EU.

However it also removed the eastern blocks ability to grow their industries fully before they had to commit to international trade, in the sense that they could never fully match the western EU countries. Capitalism has in a lot of ways improved the strucutral condition for growth, however the locked commitment to the EU has somewhat limited this same growth potential by placing them in a situation where their growth is tied to the other EU countries (read: tariff barriers makes eastern EU locked to mainly trading with western EU - aka east is to some extend exploited by western EU who seeks cheap labor close by).

I generally believe in the capitalistic theory - However I still believe that EU is limiting the growth of these eastern countries. Socialsim may actually had given them the ability to grow their own industries some more (improving efficiency, productivity etc.) - with capitalism being a natural evolution following after.

Nothing was neglected. Anyone with a grasp on basic arithmetic understands the difference between 15 and 9. It doesn't matter if you have a grudge against the primary inheritor states of the USSR, the democratic reality simply did not chime with your "the will of the people." So what if the Latvians wanted out? They're not essential. Opposing neo-liberal economic shock therapy doesn't mean you had to support violently suppressing the butthurt belt.

Eastern Bloc =/= Warsaw Pact

You simply know nothing about the USSR and Russia if you think the 90's were more pleasant than the 80's or 70's, even before that

The stans were never part of the RF
>>
>>1036605
>why did communism fall
>must be the evil west
>couldn't be that the entire economy of the USSR consisted of Russians squeezing their imperial holdings for cash and the good parts of the communist world finally managed to get away
>>
>>1036438
They didn't care about capitalism, they wanted independence, elections and were willing to go through a rough transition period to achieve it.
>>
>>1036527
this. It was shit before that.
When Ceausescu started going about some liberalisation, and raising wages and stuff, people were already revolting.
