I have an alt-his set of questions, actually.
Start with this alteration to the historical timeline:
>France and Britain convince Belgium that a German invasion is inevitable come late spring, and their best chance is to mobilize and sign on with them now, have the defenses already in place when Hitler comes knocking.
Belgium mobilizes, France moves in, and there's an allied line of trenches and field fortifications running all the way down the Maas and Dyle rivers, with at least the obvious holes filled in. British/French doctrine and tactics remain unchanged.
1) Would Grmany attack anyway in 1940?
2) Would that attack succeed?
3) If it does succeed, how bloody would it be, would WW2 change significantly?
4) If it does not succeed, how does WW2 change?
5) If it fails spectacularly, would there be a push to oust Hitler? Is it possible that this would be a year long German "tantrum" war that was quickly put down? What sanctions would be likely to be placed on Germany if "WW2" turns out to be relatively short and painless because the Germans flubbed up early? (Assuming that they do lose that badly and the French and British alone are able to impose their will, which I realize is not a given)
