They are not 'making' money though. Apart from maybe manufacturing where you turn something of a lesser value into something more (along the lines of alchemy), money does not have that value, money has the value it was given ,it's not a physical standard it's an ideological standard, it's not like when gold was used to buy things.

Fiat currency works because the inherent value of the currency comes from the ability to do business in the economic system that uses the currency.
Dollars are worth something because America can provide goods and services that you need dollars to get.
So yeah, it's a pretty good system. Vastly superior to precious metals, I'd say.
