Brit here just giving my two pence on the American Civil War:
The whole point of the war seems to me to be not about slavery at all, but about control. The idea that the whole war was about slavery is just a way for the oppressors to frame themselves as the good guys. The US could've allowed those states to secede and then, as independent neighbours, tried to persuade those free states to abolish slavery through other means - propaganda, trade sanctions, general diplomacy. It's likely that they eventually would have done, and without all the bloodshed.
But independent neighbour states don't pay taxes to the bank of Washington and they might not fight as allies in a war. They couldn't be allowed to secede because the freedom so often sang about over there is really an illusion. Georgia, Texas, Mississippi, Florida et al won their independence from London, only to find they were now owned by Washington.
"You cannot secede from the Union," is just another way of saying "Meet the old boss, same as the old boss." Washington and London have many different policies but letting their prime assets go without a fight isn't one of them.
