Hey there /his/, need a little help.
My university is requiring all students to take Philosophy (even though I'm a film production student myself). We're supposed to put together a proposal for an oral discussion for our final. Just to have a little fun, I decided to argue against moral ethics. Here's what I have so far:
Thesis: We are not obligated to seek truth, therefore moral ethics are irrelevant.
Main reasons:
*Whether we follow good or bad ethics, we are still regarded as human beings; following or not following the teachings of...

>using a poorly-defined folk saying as an example
>using Trump being similar to Hitler as an example
when you do this, you are practically inviting someone to pick at your examples. Those aren't commonly held facts, they are your opinions and the first things that come to your mind. You may want to find something that is more firmly accepted to base your arguments around
>there are so many differing ideas of what truth is, which shows that truth is subjective
that's...

What went wrong? Why was/is public housing such a spectacular failure in the United States?

>Why was/is public housing such a spectacular failure in the United States?
Americans.
More seriously, in Europe (both Western and Eastern capitalism), public housing was the triumph of the proletariat in capitalism over the private interests in land. Manufacturing capital was quite willing to discipline rentier land capital over the issue of rent super-profits, in part to shift working class consumption towards the manufacturing industries.
Public housing in Europe was...

If you give everyone housing but don't give everyone a job, then people have a place to call their own but they have no way of surviving. Combine this with the drug habits of the middle class and antagonism from mostly white police forces, and you quickly have a lot of cynics with a lot of opportunity to make money illegally in a very small space. The illegal job market is just like the legal job market, it has competition. Politicians pass harsh drug laws. If you're a drug dealer then you are always carrying...

Policies such as increasing time served for drug and gun offenses, making guns more difficult to acquire, aggressive police tactics, lowering taxes (this concentrates wealth in the hands of the already wealthy), recklessly spending money on "dem programs", the list goes on, and it was all simply misguided. One of the worst things that happened was the destruction of the public housing. In Chicago, this lead to gangs dispersing through out the city, increasing the extent of their territory and rapidly increasing...

What was the high watermark for Western Civilization?
I would say the early 1960s.
Probably the 1800's in general

Industrial revolution era was the first peak of western civilization.
Then it peaked again in the 1900s, with the second stage of the industrialization.
And then the Roaring Twenties, 1930s, 1940s, were next next peak.
And finally it peaked again, for the last time and at the height of it's power in the 1960s.
Numerous passages in the Bible portray Jesus clearly stating that the Second Coming would occur within the lifetime of his disciples.
>"Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled."
— Matthew 24:34
"This generation" refers to a span of 30-40 years, thus placing the date of the second coming before the deaths of the disciples. C.S. Lewis called this "the most embarrassing verse in the Bible" in The World’s Last Night and Other Essays.
Three...

The whole idea of a second coming itself is pretty much bunk. The Messiah, as prophecized in the Old Testament will be a human religious leader and a warrior king born of a young woman. He will not die and come back, he will live a mortal life within which he fulfill the prophetic expectations.
no, in the bible 'generation' doesn't refer to the same thing we call a generation i.e. a lifespan
I think Jesus would flip the fuck out if he discovered that 300 years later the Emperor himself becomes a Christian. To early Christians that would be like Hitler enrolling in a Yeshiva and becoming a rabbi.
Christianity focuses SO MUCH on the fact that's it's a religion of the marginal, the poor, the oppressed that it didn't cross their mind at all that a rich and powerful guy in charge of literal armies would join it without giving away any of his wealth and power. That's why Augustine had to retcon the ever loving fuck out of it.
The date is 23 March 1933. You are Adolf Hitler. The Enabling Act has just been passed, granting you effectively dictatorial powers.
What do you do (differently to what he really did) in order to win the coming war and create your Third Reich?

You think Italy alone made all the difference?

They locked up quite a few German divisions fixing their fiasco in Greece in the critical months before Barbarossa, It was also the catalyst for the German invasion of Yugoslavia which unnecessarily keep for German units out of Russia. The failure to take Moscow and thus Barbarossa is what ultimately ended any hope of the Germans breaking the Soviets and those divisions in Greece and the Balkans would have otherwise been used in support of operations in Russia.
Not to mention their North African shenanigans.
Could you recommend some philosophers who defended authoritarianism/totalitarianism? I am interested because democracy is today taken as "natural" and God-given. I just want to check the other side of the coin. I would really like to know more about it and its philosophical basis. Any period is acceptable, ancient to modern.

Islam had already spread to east africa and north africa through dawah
>>394162
A lot of the philosophical and scientific contributions of those cultures were preserved (and even built upon) by both Muslim and Catholic scholars during the middle ages, so I wouldn't go that far - and even if Byzantium somehow survived until present day, its culture would have changed greatly, as all cultures do over time.
Also keep in mind that the Ottomans, Seljuks, and many other Muslim empires were in fact Turkic nomads who half-heartedly embraced Islam as they conquered into the Muslim world. Those...

Is it possible the Siamese Empire could have industrialised more and have become a competing force like Japan? Siam did modernise, but it was not as extensive as Japan.
>>394112
Sure, anything is possible.
Why Siam and why not the Burmese Empire?
>>394195
Burmese was under british. Siam played both British and French against each other.

The most relevant issue is that the Soviet Republics were not created, or ruled to create independent entities.
This isn't just an example of borders being shit, (though that's part of it), but also economic development being designed for inclusion in a larger economic unit.
Ukraine had factories that could produce certain arms in vast numbers, but not produce self-sufficiency.

Why are protestant counties so much more successful than Catholic counties?
>>393382
Because Catholics almost exclusively go after converting African and South American countries
Cause protestantism was so fucking boring people soon abandoned the christian faith altogether.
>>393392
Catholics are not Christians though
