Hey /his/ I want to learn more about the economy, can we make a list of ~5-10 books for those starting out?
I would put these two at least
-Wealth of Nations
-Das Kapital

He's an economist the same way Ayn Rand is a "Philosopher"

You forgot Galbraith. Neo-classical economics destroys the economy

How
So there was an animated Bible cartoon on the other day, and after Christ comes back from the dead, at the very end Peter asks Him regarding what will happen to John:
>"But what about John?"
And Yeshua says:
>"Don't worry about John, you just follow me."
And it got me thinking; on today's age where people don't exactly follow standard orthodox practices, couldn't you just read the New Testament stories of Jesus and follow Him?

No its when Christ is getting crucified one of the two thieves that was with Him says:
>"You didn't even do anything wrong"
And then Christ tells the thief that he has a place in Heaven.
The Orthodox Church is very involved in the ecumenical movement, but that doesn't mean Protestants aren't crypto-Nestorians, which is poisonous to both belief and attitude.
Could Germany have realistically won WW2? Or were they doomed from the start. Would like to hear some opinions on this.
Germany ran out of steam in the summer of 1941 and from then on was just playing out the game in the hopes of a favorable surrender terms. Considering how far they were from "winning," I don't think it makes any sense to ask whether they could have won.

Not under the conditions.
Hitler would have needed to get Franco to join the war and Britian and the US to back them in the fight againts the commie filth from the east.
Should have never invaded the Soviet Union and declared war on the United States. Lets them maintain the bulwark of the West and they could retain their borders in the East up into Silesia.
But of course they didn't do this.
What's your Alt.Hist wet dream?

Erwin Rommel get's captured on that idiot charge during Crusader and I don't have to hear people saying how amazing he was ever again, he'd just be some damp squib that is a brief footnote in military history.
Cromwell finishing what he started.

Why are you an atheist? Why are you religious/spiritual? What convinced you either way?
I can't remember when I became atheist, I think it was the time we had bible study for our confirmation. It was the first time I really read the Bible. Still a member of the church though and pay church taxes.

Currently, I'm atheistic in the sense that I don't have any inclination of believing in anything I would consider as a deity. The classical idea of a deity, if I'm not mistaken, is that it's has attributes one would describe as "personal." The idea of a personal supreme being, to me, is too far-fetched to even be entertained.
Mind you, I became irreligious when I was shown New Atheist videos as a teenager, which pointed out "flaws" in Christianity; I'm not sure if they...

Christianity's uniqueness, philosophically, is it allows you to directly confront the invisible shackles of your free will. To live a sin-free life is very cut-and-dry, it's not elaborate or complex. Yet all Christians fail to do so, terribly. When you desire to not sin more than anything, with the depths of your heart, yet continue to copiously sin and can blatantly tell its sin (in hindsight if not outright while it is happening), the shackles on your individuality became apparent. When think we are free, but it...

First for metaphors as subterfuge to entrap thinking and intelligent people by dazzling them with the beauty of words, however false
Also note that the Buddha "shattered the illusion" better and more honestly than any Westerner, or even any Semite
>>603419
Which account of Buddha are you referencing?
>>603433
Not that guy but Christianity seems bogged down by superstition. Buddhism deals with suffering, a real thing that we can understand. Christianity deals with sin, an imaginary word you made up to give people a guilt complex.
Serious question: is religion a mental disorder?
It literally fits the definition of one according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
>A delusion is defined as a false personal belief based on incorrect inference about external reality and firmly sustained despite of what everyone else believes and despite what constitutes incontrovertible and obvious proof or evidence to the contrary (DSM-IV, p. 765).
>>602436
The people who started their respective religions (Jesus, Mohammed, Moses, etc) were most likely suffering from sort of mental illness. Some sort of psychosis or schizophrenia.
>>602436
She's cute.
>>602450
Oh of course, but their followers are mentally ill too. Two different kinds of disorders, but both disorders nonetheless.
Since religion is part of the humanities, are we allowed to discuss our own religions with other people?
If so and this thread doesn't get nuked early, post your:
>religion
>sect/denomination
>location
>did you convert?
/rel/ WHEN!?!?
I COME HERE EVERY SINGLE DAY FOR HISTORY. HISTORY. EVERY SINGLE DAY, THE CATALOG IS FILLED WITH BS RELIGIOUS AND PHILOSOPHY THREADS BY FEDORAS AND CRUSADER LARPERS WHILE THE ACTUAL RELEVANT HISTORICAL THREADS ONLY GET 6 REPLIES BEFORE FLOATING TO TO THE OBLIVION BEYOND PAGE 10. I DO NOT CAAAAAAAARE ABOUT YOUR SHITPOSTING AND PERSONAL BELIEFS. LEAVE LEAVE LEAVE LEAVE. NEVER COME BACK. REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

I'm an irreligious atheist.
The closest thing to a denomination I can think of would be Secular Humanism.
I live just outside New York City.
I was raised Lutheran, never very devout. Started studying religion and philosophy in college after a spiritual crisis, and now consider myself on a lifelong journey of investigation, trying to be as open-minded and rational in my beliefs as I go along.

Start a history thread then, faggot.

Atheism is depressing
>>601977
Only if you're a fag about it. There's no reason for it to be depressing at all.
Happy atheist here. AMA

Why do anything if I came into existence without a higher purpose? It would be comforting to know there was a divine reason for my creation, and actually give a reason to do anything.
Stirner was right
Dualism is a lie
Religions, nations and morals are a lie. The world is ruled by might
Only the self truly matters
Does anyone have good arguments against this?
Yeah, graduating high school
>>601964
Fucking kek. Stirnerfags on suicide watch.
>>601953
Nah m8 altruism is a myth, there's no argument but MUH FEELINGS.
At the end of the day morality is totally irellevant and arbitrary.
I can't even undstand why moral objectivism even exists.
Was the Holocaust greatly exaggerated? Did the starving occur because the supply lines were cut off?
>>601808
>Was the Holocaust greatly exaggerated?
Tends to be underexaggerated by a claim that it was unique to Europeans accused of being Jews.
This underreports the mass preventable deaths of Soviet Citizens, Yugoslavs, leftists, atheists, religious minorities, gypsies, etc.
>Did the starving occur because the supply lines were cut off?
In 1941 the Wehrmacht deliberately starved millions of Soviet POWs. This was before the Hunger Plan was general IIRC.
No and no. It wasn't only jews, though, plenty of russians, gypies and pows ended up in the camps and met horrible fates, but a lot of people think it was only jews or even worse, that the official sources claim there were only jews that died.
It's pretty disgusting how it's still used for political gain in Israel and elswhere too btw.
>"The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles."
How does anyone take Marx seriously as a historian? That statement alone discredits him as a credible interpreter of historical events.
>>601638
Don't forget that his conception of what constitutes a "class" is a giant step backwards from Machiavelli's formation centuries before.
>>601638
Maybe not class struggles, but economics in general is probably the biggest driver of history
>How does anyone take Marx seriously as a historian?
No one does that in the first place.
Are all Indo-European language speaking people descendant from one tribe?( a.k.a the Proto Indo-europeans). I think the most damning evidence for the is that the Greek, Sanskrit, and Roman words for a major god is virtually the same word meaning "Sky-father" despite India having no cultural links with europe.
What is known about these people and where is their homeland most likely ?
I bet they were fucking niggers.
