What has San Marino done? It's the oldest "country" in the world and yet it doesn't seem to have done anything ever. Genuinely curious.

Who was the most powerful world power at precisely 1700?

I know it's one of the big 7, but neither Ottomans nor France could solo their arch rivals, HRE and England respectively.

So who?

I kinda agree. England was enjoying a winning streak in the late 1600's and early 1700's. However, England won because they chose the right alliances, and France fought wars either alone or with a single ally or two.

I'd consider France, without alliances, to be the greatest power; I don't think any nation would win 1 vs 1 at this moment and that will be true for many, many years ahead.

England is rising at a really fast rate, but it is far from superpower status (England is the...

>Why is he a meme on here?
One person routinely spams this board with posts about him, then posts replies to his own posts to make it seem like Mosley is some sort of hot topic. In addition, this spammer creates numerous pictures of Mosley in an attempt to reinforce the already forced meme.

It's a shame that /pol/-tier memes are being forced on every board.

>Can somebody explain this guy to me?

A member of British parliament who never quite could fit in, yet still had the respect of his peers. During his career he originally was elected as a Conservative, before a brief flirtation with Liberalism, eventually sitting with the Labour party becoming an early advocate of Keynesian economics. When his party was elected to government in 1929 he was given a titular ministerial position, but with responsibility for unemployment. He eventually fell into conflict with his seniors in the cabinet who rejected his policies of mass public works to decrease unemployment and bring profit over time repeatedly, resigning his position in 1930. He finally left the party on 1931 when his policies were rejected narrowly by the national party convention, taking 6 other members of parliament with him to a form a new party, the 'New Party'. After an opportunity to visit Mussolini in 1931 he believed that the only future was fascism, and set about creating his own model of British fscism, renaming his movement the British Union of Fascists, the moment his career died. Mosley's own policies slowly became neglected in his own movement, with members of the old British fascistii becoming the dominant force by 1934 along with future splitters, and the party which had slowly began to grow and had some press support, lost all credibility with the increasing opposition to fascism abrosd, and antisemitism being brought to the table, but he never left and remained as leader until the end when he was imprisoned in 1940. By the end of WWII he was nothing more than an old establishment voice that the new far right used to announce their policies, after two failed attempts to run for parliament again in the 1960s he left Britain for the final time to live out his years suffering from Parksinsons, dying aged 84 in 1980.

A man who wanted what he saw as the best for his country, who destroyed his career and reputation in the process.

Check the Basques and the proposed 'Vasconic' languages. My question is whether the Picts are a non-IE group?
they predated the Celts and were eventually Celticized. Perhaps Basques are distant relatives.

We don't know a hell of a lot for certain--there are a lot of interesting data points but a lot that we can't reach firm conclusions about.
We know that agriculture was not an indigenous development; it spread to Europe through a major wave of migration from Anatolia. Oetzi was a representative member of this farmer population; Sardinians are the closest population today, though not as representative as is sometimes suggested.
We don't really know the origins of the Vasconic or Tyrsenian language families. Vasconic could be indigenous or could be from the...

What civilization or nation has experienced the most stereotypically apocalyptic societal collapse in history? Please describe accounts/descriptions from primary sources or historians if possible.

For example, here is a British officer and historian Stanley Casson describing the post-WWI collapse of law and order that he witnessed in Istanbul:

That sounds like a libertarian paradise come true.
But seriously, I think that, if you go for a more long-term kind of apocalyptic end of civilization, I think the late bronze age crisis is the worst: civilizations in the balkans, anatolia and the levant ceased to exist in a period of a hundred years. Among this you have volcanoes, destruction o crops and bands of pirates, mercenaries and raiders roaming the Mediterranean looking for something to loot. The only civilization that barely survived were the egyptians,but...

Though that isn't to say it was a weak society, Carthage is arguably Rome's most powerful challenge in their rise to power, with Carthage trading blow for blow and lasting 100 years against them.

But yeah in the end they lost to simple conquest, as most nations did.

I have a question for the atheists of /his/. Oftentimes when I talk to my atheist friends about why they don't believe in a a god they'll say that there is no proof for one's existience. However, by this logic atheism is just as invalid as theism because there's no proof that a diety doesn't exist either. Can any atheists give me a non-meme response here?

>there's no proof that a diety (deity*) doesn't exist either

So I could accuse you of murder, and the court would have no choice but to indict you because there's no evidence saying you didn't do it.
>>
I'm an atheist because the idea of god is obviously just a product of human psychology, and it's foolish to consider the existence of every impossible thing that anyone on earth has ever imagined.
>>
God's already been established here: >>637821

Atheists have offered no equivalent evidence that there is no God.

If you wind history back to 1921 and run it again in every way that it could play out, in what percentage of the resulting timelines would the USSR collapse in the late 80's / early 90's as it did in ours? What percentage has it collapse earlier?

What fraction of timelines have it survive to the present day?

And in what fraction does it survive and have a successful economy in the present day? Reminder that posting zero for any of the answers is mathematically ridiculous, given that there would be practically infinite timelines.

Calling it now: the world gets fucked by nukes in at least half of the timelines.
>>

I just can pull the numbers out of my ass so see them more as tendencies. It is important to evaluate the factors that lead to decline and or success:

1) Collapse as in OTL: I dunno, maybe 35%. In my oppinion the soviets were pretty stable and avoided beeing captured by the nazis or nuclear war. So i guess early 90s/ late 80s are already pretty successfull outcomings for the soviets.

Earlier collapse: 45%
Collapse before ww2 due to internal power struggle after lenins death or western intervention or whatnot.
No help, wrong strategical decisions etc. leading to defeat by the nazis.
Thermonuclear/conventional war leading to collapse of the udssr.
The arms race is more extrem then OTL so slightly earlier collapse due to economic situation, same goes for another war before/parallel to afghanistan.

Dragging on till today without satellite states 10%:
Hardliner remove Gorbatshev or prevent his rise to power. The economy is still fucked up but due to oppression the soviets hold on to the core terriotry of the udssr. Backwater nation not a superpower but a great power due to huge but outdated military and nuclear weapons.

Surviving till today with satellites 5%:
Same as above but with massive opression in some or all satellites. Low chance due to the sorry state the soviets were in in 89.

Economically successfull and surviving till today maybe 5%.
Low chance due to nature of the soviet system and the cold war that will happen in most timelines if the soviets win ww2 and are able to secure a sphere of influence. To enable a economically successfull there ae 2-3 things that could happen in some timelines:
1. A not so convinving victory in ww2. The soviets are only able to regain their own territory in ww2 evtl. without the baltic states and east poland. Without its own bloc the soviets don´t start the cold war and slowly transition to a more capitalist society after stalins death.
2. The NEP pulls through, the soviets become more and more capitalist 1/2
