If America is the modern day Rome then does that make Britain the modern day Greece?
>Greatest empire in the world until it became partitioned
>Iconic infantry (redcoats and hoplites)
>Unified several smaller nations and states
>Ahead of the rest of the world in art, literature and science
>America (Rome) was directly influenced by Britain's (Greece's) culture
>Some of the...

I couldn't really think of anything else. Tbh Persia was conquered countless times whereas Russia has been impenetrable.
Trying to think of who Egypt would be.

Why did Pan Arabism fail?
How could it work?
Because arab nation doesn't exist and even within the subgroups they have tribal bullshit going on.
>>872946
Because Pan-anything is a retarded idea.

do you deny the northernness of that ireland?
>United Kingdom
Yes, the crowns of scotland and england were united into one.
>Great Britain
Yes, it is the largest island of the British Isles. Naming the largest island from a group of isles "Great _______" has been common for millennia
>Northern Ireland
Yes, it is the north of Ireland
Come back when Scotland secedes

The term 'British Isles' was only coined in 1577 by John Dee.
Also, the northernmost point in Ireland is in County Donegal.
Share all your favorite history podcasts or youtube channels! I've just started listening to The History of Rome podcast and I'm enjoying it. Historypodcasters.com has a lot of good stuff to.
Personally I'd love anything to do with Spain or the Spanish Empire.

Currently listening to a long series (~20 parts) on the Meiji restoration. Really good, i only have a casual interest in japanese history but he repeats stuff a lot so its easy to follow.
The history of japan podcast

Listen to what this guy said, history of Japan by Isaac Meyer is fantastic
Laszlo Montgomery's History of China is also a good one.

I'm literally listening to that right now. I think this is my 3rd listen. It's a life saver at work.
If you had the chance to gain eternal happiness, that is, an existence from there-on-out of only happiness and no worries. Would you go for it?
I mean, would you give up lifes ups and downs, knowing that you would be absolutely happy that way? I don't want to argue about what your personal definition of happiness is, the way the total bliss is achieved doesn't matter in this. I am talking about the achieved state/feeling of happiness with an eternal duration (imagine a fairy wish or somesort of everlasting drug). This could mean that you just freeze in your tracks...

No, you can't know true happiness without true sadness, you can't know light without darkness. You can't know life without death.
>>877638
I think that this could be argued. What if someone gained eternal life and after billions of years forgot what death means. Would that person not be still alive?
>>877596
Yes, that's why I am a born again Christian. That is exactly the existence I expect to receive in the new earth. Dualism is for godless people.
Is there any truth to what fundies say about ancient Babylon or is it all horseshit?
Also, jack chick thread.
>>877475
Complete horseshit.
>"Baal" is Ugaritic for "lord"
>has no connection to ancient Egypt whatsoever
The typical Baal mentioned in the OT is Baal Hadad, a deity of storms, or Baal Zebub/Beelzebub, Lord of Flies
>>877475
Yes.
Ancient Israelites dindu nothing
How do Christian reconcile the fact that the devil is never once mentioned in the Old Testament and is only dubiously supported by the New Testament with their belief in the devil? There's nothing to indicate that the snake in the Garden of Eden was anything more than a trickster animal, a common trope in mythology.

Hello grandson.
Christians always misunderstand that in Jewish cosmology, Satan is an angel who was appointed by God himself to tempt and test humans. He was never cast from Heaven, he never fell, he's not 'evil', as he's merely following God's commands.
According to Jewish belief, anyways.

Catholics believe that the Bible is an imperfect document and that tradition should also inform them on their spiritual lives.
Is this true? So it's okay as long as it's love, not lust?

Leviticus 18:22
>Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.
Leviticus 20:13
>If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable
Corinthians 6:9-10
>Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
It is OK to be gay if you only feel attraction to men but don't act on your attraction. There is a big Catholic gay group that argues this.

Half plagued by Plebbits, half plagued by pseudo-theologians or failed historians. Neither of which seem to be putting forth a reasonable and completely unbiased arguments without throwing racial or sexual slurs. Truthfully, it is my fault for scouring Internet forums for intelligible discussions.
Stupid site. Only serves as masturbatory aid for athiests.Christians will refuse to listen to it and anybody else will see it as the supreme example of buttmad v Christians.
russian history noob here, started a russian history course, learnt about the Tsar up until the Bolshevik seziure of Petrograd.
i am fascinated by Trotsky and Lenins work
but seriously, why doesn't communism work?
It work great, the only reason the Soviet union failed was because of Western sabotage.
Just ask any Russian patriot and they will tell you the truth ;^)

communism works on paper
not irl
It'll work fine. Just take humans out of the equation.
Alternate history question.
WW2 starts as in our timeline with Eastern European countries falling, then France. After a short Battle for Britain, Italy takes Malta and Italy along with Germany engage in Mediterranean campaign.
In 1941 however, Hitler does not attack Soviet union. He waits.
As war drags on and Japan attacks USA and USA eventually land in Africa, Germany opts for an organized withdrawal. Up to 1943 they fight the British and Americans, then sucesfully withdraw to Italy and other occupied territories.
During all this time Germany...

>>876342
even if we somehow agree with this opinion, then 44 is way, way, way too early - what we do actually know (as opposed to icebreaker-tier tinfoil hat speculations) is that just before the invasion (in 40-41, basically a couple months prior) stalin instructed his staff to consider the possibility of a german invasion in the upcoming "couple of years" and that is what they primarily planned for at the time, an overall defensive plan against a german invasion a few years down the road, a far cry from invading germany/europe
Is it fair to judge events, people, and policies in history by modern moral and ethical standards, or should one strive only to judge them by the standards of the time period they occurred in?
>>876209
It's not fair or unfair
It merely is
Judge all you'd like, they'd judge us the same way. It's what people do.
>>876209
>Is it fair to judge events, people, and policies in history by modern moral and ethical standards, or should one strive only to judge them by the standards of the time period they occurred in?
If you're a historian, such judgements go against disciplinary criteria and will see you rapidly become not a historian.

Of course not, how could it possibly be?

dank quote brah
>“Pleasure is never as pleasant as we expected it to be and pain is always more painful. The pain in the world always outweighs the pleasure. If you don't believe it, compare the respective feelings of two animals, one of which is eating the other.”
The animal being eaten suffers a bit and then never suffers again, but the animal doing the eating survives because it ate the other animal and can continue to feel pleasure/suffering.
but isnt being deprived of future pleasure forever the greatest suffering?
>>876090
no because you have to exist to feel either
>>876086
>pain is always more painful
Tell that to the scared little kids who cry and beg for hours to get out of a little shot they forget about in seconds.
How did foreigners take to Greco-Roman Interpretatio of their gods? Rhine Germans seem to dig the Hercules Club (Thor hammer) necklaces.
>>876037
all I know is I read somewhere that the Persians invading Greece didn't sack Delphi because they interpreted Apollo as a Greek version of their god Ahuramazda
No idea if that's true or not
>>876037
>How did foreigners take to Greco-Roman Interpretatio of their gods?
They didn't seem to care. Certainly the Celts seemed content to simply use both names when talking about their gods, you find inscriptions to "Mercury Teutatis" or "Sullis Minerva".
