It's 117 AD, the height of the great Roman Empire. The course of history is thrown off as a bloody civil war breaks out between Trajan the current emperor, Hadrian the chosen successor, and none other than you, a powerful general that has won over the people and a few legions. After many battles, you come out victorious and seize the throne from Trajan, killing him and Hadrian. As the new emperor of Rome, the legions and people on your side, what are your first moves?

Abodon as many unhodable positions as possible. Drill the armies into shape by constantly raiding the neighboring territories except Persia. Try centralizing more prestige and God like status in emperor without becoming a tyrant. Make succession laws permanent as I can.
>Get assasinated
Create a dynasty then split the empire among my sons in my will
Fun ensues. Great fun
Well operating under the assumption I'm Roman, probably rub olive oil all over my dick then fuck a child slave.
Are there any bigger bros in history than Octavian and Agrippa.
Gaius and Aulus

Probably yeah, considering they broke up in the end and never made up.

So why exactly did the bolshevists murder the Tsarist family?
Surely it was not out of pure bloodlust, it must have been a calculated act on their part.
Could it be possible that the soviets realized the importance of people as symbols in shaping domestic perceptions and tried to eradicate the whole collective folk memory of the russian people because of this so as to prepare the way for "new bolshevist man" going forward - A sort of iconoclasm so to speak?
Also why are other soviet crimes and genocidal mass atrocities such as the holodmor so...

Revenge for 4000+ years of blue blood tyranny.

Hey, haven't had this thread for a while. Good on you for actually providing some discussion points, and not just making a support thread for nonces who like tugging it to the fantasy of heroically sweeping in and rescuing the princesses like what usually happens.

What do you know about early aviation warfare /his/?

I've seen Claudius portrayed as an underdog genius and I've seen him portrayed as a complete retard. What is the truth /his?
Depends on who's writing about him. But Claudius is generally seen as a smart guy who took advantage of his diabetes to make himself seem like he wasn't a threat (or maybe because of his disablities he really wasn't a threat) who ended up as emperor, and did a pretty good job because he was a guy of normal intelligence in a fucked up body.
He was a good emperor with some physical/mental ticks. Contemporaries couldn't get past the stuttering and the hunch back (or whatever it was) enough to give him full credit.
Why did he choose Nero over Britannicus?
Are there any fortresses that have never been taken? Or at least went uncaptured for a period longer than Constantinople (874 years in sea attack, 1123 to actually break through the walls)?
I'm guessing that to qualify, the fortress needs to have been attacked at least semi-regularly over its history? Also, does starving out the defenders count?
>>968285
This one :^)
>>968297
Not talking in specific attacks, like the Siege of Candia, but in the whole history of the fort. And anything goes, so long as it got the attackers outside inside in the end.

Tang or Song?

Tang is better remembered for not losing china to the Mongols, but I see the Song as an extension of the cultural renaissance of the Tang. I like both.

I see terrible meme philosophical arguments for and against God.
What are some of the worst you've heard for/against religion?
>Either God exists or doesn't.
>If he doesn't and you don't believe then nothing happens.
>But if he does and you don't believe then you go to Hell.
>Just believe he exists, it's safer.
>>966659
honestly Pascal's wager, though I also think it's in a way the strongest. simply pointing out other religions that also claim to have the exclusive path to some type of salvation makes it collapse but I also think that it is the main thing that keeps people in their faith even when they've seen convincing arguments against it. this was true for me anyways. i was convinced that christianity was unlikely to be true long before I actually stopped believing because I couldn't stop being afraid of hell
>>966659
Pascal's Wager is the one that sticks out as being the worst argument for god.
There's quite a few bad arguments against god as well but I can't think of any one with a name.
Post historical images that really make you think.

Sherman was one of the best generals in the entirety of American history and pretty much predicted future warfare, yet he's nothing more than a mention in military history compared to lee and grant.
Butt hurt southerners didn't like "total war" ala WWI.
Sucks to be them. He kicked ass.
He does have a giant 30 foot statue in Washington DC though.
Sherman did nothing wrong.
>>961932
His contemporaries thought he was legitimately insane when he predicted the Civil War would have an enormous cost of blood and would drag on for years.
He was so universally maligned that he basically had a mental breakdown.
His brand of total war was the only way to bring it to a close. He understood the nature of the war better than anyone and prosecuted it with a ruthlessness that is entirely above historical contempt.
Have you ever felt the need to expirience faith?
I'm a non-believer but sometimes I feel the need to believe in something bigger than me, something spiritual.
But I just can't, no mather how hard I try, I cannot have faith in any god or religion.
How can I expierience that feeling? Do you feel like that sometimes? Got any books or theories for this subject? Am I just a pretentious, angsty faggot?
It's not something you talk into somebody. I would seriously just recommend reading and reflection in lieu of asking an imageboard. Training the mental faculties is far more fun than arguing.
4chan to me is more of a leisure, not a place where I look for serious thought, even if something profound might pop up every now and then.

Why didn't china ever become a huge world power?
They certainly had the population and organization with potential to become a huge power
But China has always had a lack of innovation, they just steal technology from other people and don't even copy it as well or improve upon it
For centuries the Chinese had great ships and did a lot of trade but they never sent their ships anywhere they did not already know about
What if they had sent their ships east and found america centuries before the Europeans?
My theory is that Chinese society...

I really don't understand where this 'Chinese can't invent' shit comes from. The Chinese invented the compass, paper, paper money, printing, and gunpowder, the first modern-style bureaucracy, and a lot of other shit. Have you ever considered that the Chinese simply didn't want to colonize the Americas because they thought life was fine in China and they weren't as obsessed with gold as the je- I mean Spaniards and Anglos? And I don't see how you can claim that the West has a stronger society when China has a longer history of continuous civilization,...

What the hell is this meme history? You do realize history lasts a lot longer than just whatever you read about on the news? Replace literally every mention of "China" with "People's Republic of China" and you might have a theory, but a theory that's would be always subject to change as it's a rapidly...

My amateur theory is that China started off with too good of a position. They conquered their corner of the world and became a civilizational hegemony to such an extent that I don't think you can find another historical instance of one cultural group being so dominant so consistently in their region.
So China had no reason to expand, they were already kings in their own little sphere and even the common folk got along fine enough with what was already conquered.
We have the benefit of hindsight though...

Is direct democracy a good idea or is it just the tyranny of the majority?
It's mob rule and always turns into despotism.
Democracy is retarded and a bad idea.
