Is Justinian basically the greatest emperor of all time? Why and why not?
>>983615
>the greatest Emperor of all time
That's not Napoleon or Augustus.

>greatest emperor of all time
The greatest emperor spot can't be occupied by cvcks.
Darius I was pretty neat.

You gotta share it with your gomrades though.
I've noticed that a lot of people tend to really dislike Thomas Jefferson. I actually sort of used to think that he was the great thinker of the American Revolution but after all the reading and opinions that I've heard, I'm not so sure. What you think about him as a thinker, president, and person?
In honor of his 273rd birthday, Thomas Jefferson thread.
As a Christian I'm predisposed not to like him. By all accounts he's one my religion's greatest enemies.

>that he was the great thinker of the American Revolution but after all the reading and opinions that I've heard, I'm not so sure
It was actually Madison, Hamilton and Adams that were the thinkers of the revolution. What Jefferson did was ensure French alliances and support and wrote a very rough draft of the Declaration of Independence. Madison is, imo, the true founding father of the United States of America. Hamilton quickly perverted the purpose of the revolution and used...

Jefferson was a true liberal, in the classical sense. His attacks on Christianity on one hand and his insistence on small government and individualism on the other means that both conservatives and modern liberals have things to dislike about him
I'm having a Greek, Roman an Medieval art exam tomorrow.
Anything important I should know?
Nigga how the fuck should we know
Whatever your prof has been talking about will be on the test, anything we tell you is unlikely to be relevant to your final score

Start with the Greeks
>>981377
Then the Romans.
Why would they build such a beautiful piece of detailed art, and then place it on a huge pedestal in the middle of an open forum so high up that no one could see shit?
>>980587
I'm pretty sure he knew we'd be looking at it in the future
it's was painted and wasn't on a huge pedestal in an open forum, it was inside a building with different levels

ITT: We list reasons why Christianity is the best religion ever

I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Matthew 19:23-26
Um.
Truly a more civilized time.

Maybe Seneca was just throwing some top banter, or meant the Romans had so much excess they would get rid of what was already good in order to consume more, or he was a butthurt Greek captive philosopher
Reminds me of that one feast in The Hunger Games, involving a character called Seneca Crane. The feastgoers drank a vomit inducing drink so that they could eat more
educate yourselves lads
i should organize my /his/ spurdos into folders. If any drawfags (or even someone moderately skilled, gondolas aren't that hard to draw, but I'm sure I'm still not that good) I'd love to drop some /his/ related art and photos for you to draw gondolas into.

The theodicy presented in Hegel's philosophy of history and preserved in his lecture notes succeeds as a theodicy but not as a theory of history.
What Leibniz called the "principle of the best" pertains to this world (i.e. all events tend toward the best possible outcome).
Marx has some merit, but only as a dissenting voice among a group of yes-men.
The United States is a good country, overall.
Philosophy is a worthwhile activity insofar as it results in moral progress on the part of the one who performs it.

The rape of Belgium made them bad guys.
I didn't believe this but I once had a dream with a History book. It was in the style of an actual one I read as a kid.
It said the Saxon's first city was destroyed by a giant candy.
I didn't know much about Saxons and neither about the migration period, but I now guess it explains the migatrions
Let's get through the common ones first:

>medieval knights' armor was so heavy they needed help to mount their horse, and couldn't stand up if they fell over

The Battle of Marne was near the beginning of the War you dingus. If the French just upped and quit right at the beginning they would have lost so much face on the world scene that any chance at world political player pull would have gone straight out the window for the next century and a half with no one ever considering France an ally at all. Furthermore the impact on french territories world wide would have had severe back lashes as well.
It would have not been a slap on the wrist with Germany saying "Bad...
