Yes. His outfit is simple - he's looking towards the future, he's holding a pipe, the picture is intentionally very paternalistic.

If the abrahamic faiths didn't spread as they did or straight up didn't exist, would the world be better or worse?
Would we be better off with old world polytheism?
what are the major changes in ethics and philosophy that were adopted when Christianity took a rise?

>Would we be better off with old world polytheism

Polytheism is a fascinating system. You either interpret foreign gods as your own or allow foreigners to have foreign gods. And although certain cults got persecuted for being dangerous, a set of new gods was seen as an opportunity. Plus diversity of faith worked very well with European society that never took to consolidated empire after Rome fell.

Basically we wouldn't see religion be a major conflict source, barring...

Don't most old world religions state that their rulers are gods? wouldn't that cause tension?

Almost certainly yes. Decentralized religion has almost all of the advantages of centralized religion, with little to none of the disadvantages

There was no Roman Emperor in the west. The position was null and void. When Charlemagne conquered Italy, the Pope gave him the title of Roman Emperor to win his favor and get the papal states.

Questions you ask when someone says they're "into history" that you pray they can answer.

I ask three questions in descending order of difficulty/obscurity (I'm American btw)

"Are you familiar with history at all?"

"Yeah I think I know a fair bit."

Question 1: "Are you familiar with the Habsburg dynasty?"

"No not really. I'm really into WWII and the Civil War, you know."

Question 2: "Okay then, what was your favorite battle from WWII? Mine was Kursk."

"Yeah...

You're questions are pleb tier shit, OP.

For instance, say someone says they're really into WW2. I would then ask them:

>Why were all major powers in the conflict pervasively unable to match their airframe production and their pilots/aircrew training? Every single one of them produced vastly more aircraft than they had trained personnel to fly, and even when you add in the extra vehicles to be sold to smaller allies who didn't have aviation industries of their...

Where do history end and where do "nowadays" begin?
6 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.

If the sticky is anything to abide to, then it is 25 years.
>>
>>1070837
Personally, I think it becomes "nowadays" at the 1900s. We should be able to talk about stuff past that point of course, but it's a fundamentally different atmosphere. Saying a nation did an atrocity 200 years ago is largely meaningless to the people today. but stuff like the Armenian Genocide is still politicized even now. And if you are willing to venture past some of the few debates left by the world war, you get the ongoing controversies like "Was a state for Jewish people in Arabia a good idea?"
>>
>>1070837
>Where do history end

The present moment. History is as much a treatment of sources and a method or understanding as it is a time period, historical methods can be applied to any event no matter how recent.

Holy Romans live here.png
3 MB,
This isn't a question of whether or not it was a good state, nor is it a thread for Voltaire memes. My question is, is the bizarre Confederate system the region had, with the complex borders, lack of unity, outside countries having borders that cross through its borders etc. unique in history. On sites like geocron, which show borders throughout history, HRE is the only state it feels the need to stick a blue border around and show internal borders.

If it's not unique, what's a good example of a state having a similarly complex internal governing situation?

How did checks and balances work in medieval monarchy?

The king needed the troops of the nobles for war, and the nobles needed the king to give them titles and shit.
The king needed the commoners and the Church for money, and those two needed the king for him to approve laws that they wanted.
>>
>>1070713

The king only directly controlled a very small amount of land (and thus, manpower and money) directly. Everything else, he would ask/demand support from his vassals.

If he treated them too badly, his vassals would have all sorts of interesting excuses as to why they couldn't make this year's campaign, but they wished him all the best.

If he ran things REALLY badly, this year's campaign would be against a large number of his vassals who are taking up arms against him.

They probably did on rare occasions. Their cousins back in the Levant had the same practices.

The Romans can't really claim any moral high ground though.

Possibly, and very likely near the end of the Punic wars. After all, the Romans did it too in times of extreme crisis.

A distraught and corrupted New York stock broker plummets to his death as law enforcement watches helplessly from the curb.

The man willingly leapt to his demise as specially tasked law enforcement attempted to infiltrated his office on suspicions of fraudulent investments.

Officer Duncan Fraser (seen in the rear of the photo) was on traffic watch when the incident unfolded, and is quoted as saying "Poor bastard. Tomorrow night have been a brighter day", which after widespread media attention is credited with the first time the...

It's a shame a cop couldn't get there in time to help him.

It's for the best though, as being involved in high level fraud like that is dangerous and if he talked to the cops his whole family would have been killed.
