Okay so I do know a good deal about this but I can't give you a concrete answer.
To be honest, I suppose he did just "spam pikes" and used the same formation for nearly every battle, but the thing was that nobody in the ancient world had an answer to this.

Not that guy, but one thing about pike formations is that arrows aren't as effective as you'd think. You know those rows of protruding pikes pointing up at increasing angles behind the first row? They serve to deflect incoming arrows.
Is there a distinct lack of non official documents in East Asia or have we just not translated them into english yet?
When looking back at Roman stuff you find letters, personal concordances and other stuff of that sort. When I read about Chinese history there's a distinct lack of that despite several of these histories saying that the Chinese were printing tens of thousands of books per year at around the Tang dynasty.
Probably most destroyed by the occasional dynastic purge or communism.
More people died in East Asia during the time between 0 AD and 1600. That might have something to do with it. Plus there's no one language in China.
