What is your favorite historical fiction?
The entire series.
Easily Colleen McCullough's Masters of Rome, but The Long Ships by Frans G. Bengtsson runs a close second.
Is there any rational justification for the existence of the state? If so, can it be reconciled with the inherent violence of statism in the form of taxation, border control, etc.? If not, does that necessarily invalidate statism as an ideology?
The state's mission is to order the material to accord with the spiritual.
is there a system that works better than the Nation state?
>>1113187
So the nation-state is good from a utilitarian perspective?
When you ask someone to treat others as they themselves would like to be treated, is that an appeal to logic or emotion?
>>1113046
It's an appeal to emotion. It's a call for sympathy without any reasoning behind it.
its not even an argument, its more like a philosophy

What the fuck was his problem?

Mad he only saw half the world

Have you taken a good look at his picture?
>>1112934
Was it autism?
>grant animals rights
>have to become a vegan weed-shirt wearing hippy utilitarian scum
>don't grant animals rights
>have no arguments against shitskins abusing animals out of sadism
How the fuck do we solve this
>>1112754
by being somewhere in the middle?
>>1112764
There are no middlegrounds in philosophy

I disagree with his ideals, but respect him for living by them.
What are the earliest examples of military hazing? I don't mean rights of passage like in Spartan society, but malicious abuse.

>>1112639
Prior to modernity corporal and capital chastisement weren't "abuse" nor were they "malicious," but rather reinforced the natural and fundamental order of the world.
So I suppose Martinet / Prussian discipline.

You forgot rum, sodomy and the lash.
Why the hell did Hitler want Lebensraum in the East so bad? Who came up with this ridiculous idea?
Like having huge stretches of a barren wasteland (with some resources to be fair) full with millions of people who want to kill you, would solve all their fucking problems.
Nobody could even quarantee that somehow Slavic blood (gasp!) wouldn't infiltrate the German gene pool. This kind of thing is inevitable because men think with their dicks.
>>1112342
He wanted to bring National Socialism to the Slavs to make them escape their ruler ship by the Jews.
>>1112342
He just wanted to conquer stuff because it's cool and edgy. Not because it was really necessary.
>>1112342
>Why the hell did Hitler want Lebensraum in the East so bad?
Probably something to do with his father issues.
Lebensraum was an extension in right wing German ideology of the "place in the sun" imperialism of late Imperial Germany. This was in a 19th century context of scientific racism and the conception of a pseudo-Darwinian action on "the nation." Lebensraum was a way to purify the German Nation of the horrors of industrialisation, war and modernity through...

I'm interested in reading the book but it seems like there's a lot of differing opinions of which translation is best, does anyone have recommendations?
>>1112326
none of them
it's a terribly boring book
>not learning German, both the Austrian and the Guttenberg Bible dialects, to be able to speak German fluently.
>>1112338
I'm not reading it to be entertained though am I
The Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria are said to be nicknames. My professor said one is nearly impossible to find and only one student has ever gotten it.
>>1112317
Nina = Santa Clara
Santa Maria = La Santa MarÃa de la Inmaculada Concepción (yeah)
Pinta = name is unknown
>>1112521
This
I'm from the town where the Santa Clara was made. Santa Clara is a monastery in a town called Moguer and the Niño brothers, who lived there, were the boatbuilders.
Tell me they're not still teaching that crap in school. What did your professor tell you that he discovered America? There's no reason for Columbus to be taught in any primarily English speaking country. The guy shipwrecked in a place called Santo Domingo.
Aside from Sun Tzu, are there any western generals/commanders/pleb who wrote a book on an interesting aspect of war and conflict?
Clausewitz.
Dupuy
Mahan.
It's the early 1920's and you've been appointed head of the Soviet Union. How do you govern it and what changes do you make to avoid the mistakes that Stalin & co. did in real life?
Hard mode: you're not allowed to drop communism.
Ultrahard mode: you're not allowed to adopt capitalism in any form whatsoever for at least 50 years.

Why did he hate Marx so much?
>>1111883
He realized he was so absolutely and totally BTFO that he had no response other than
>Y-you're a Jew!
>>1111897
>a good meme is made
>stalinists respond by making an incredibly butthurt and unfunny version
literally every time

can you show me the good meme
My dad loves his parents and talks fondly of his childhood. He mentions casually that his mum and dad would smack him for being bad. But he never ever smacked me, and when I asked him about this discrepancy he says that he never contemplated doing it (though I was a well behaved child).
Has humanity reached peak comfy and we don't need to respond harshly to bad behaviour?
>>1111477
Nah you were just a good kid. I used to get smacked when I ducked up and now I'm a pretty decent person I stay away from idiots and trouble and not a lot of people hate me and I try to be a nice person
>>1111477
Depends where you live m8, some places hitting children is seen as cruel and inhumane, in other places (even in what we think of as the developed world) parents beat their children all the time. My parents had to send a note requesting that the teachers at my school not paddle me (although I don't think it was done at my school anyway).
>tfw other kids would get into trouble at school and their parents would pick them and buy them McDonald's after class
>tfw I got the shit beaten out of my ass for even slight transgressions
Worst feeling is sitting in class for hours dreading having to go home. Non-Asian kids will never know this feel.
