The only reason why the life of medieval peasants is seen as so bad is because of revolutionary and enlightenment thinkers trying to distance themselves from their agrarian roots and so presented them as backwards, dirty, brutalized idiots.

I was watching the Vikings episode where the Christians cut the ear off of a woman adulteress. On the other hand, Viking society is portrayed as being much more "tolerant" of adultery and even cuckoldry. I can't help but be on he side of Christians on this one. Adultery and sexual degeneracy must be punished in order to create a stable society. Of all arguments for Christianity, this seems to be the strongest. Whereas when pagans speak of a "healthier" approach to sexuality, I can't help but remember those cuckold scenes from the Vikings series.
Now how accurate is this? Were adultery and promiscuity tolerated in pagan societies? We're women given more "freedom" (we all know what that means)?

A bigger factor imo was the abandonment of large crop producing areas. When you have gaul peasants revolting in Gaul, and angry Franks in your doorstep how do you expect to get food for your provinces.
I think it was the unstable political structure that allowed Alaric into the empire and later the goths into Spain.

Trying to write a fantasy book. Not to bore you with the details, but how far would society have been able to progress with no or VERY limited access to iron? Would we not start seeing the strain until industrialization and would be able to make due with inferior bronze up until the middle ages, or would access to only bronze at best make it nearly impossible to even progress to where we were in the middle ages?

I don't know the answer to your quesiton, but I've been writing fantasy novels too, and in my studies I found that Inuit (if I recall) tribes were able to make rudimentary iron tools without mining, from meteorite iron.
We'd actually be more advanced
Bronze production required extensive trade routes, and it's a stronger material than iron
