Why do people continue to believe in the existence of it when it has been debunked?
http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2016/06/theres-no-such-thing-as-free-will/480750/
Why do people think that our will following causal factors means it's somehow unfree? Compatibilism > hard determinism.
I don't think it's a question that really has any practical implications or that most people even think about. Freedom that actually exists doesn't even require free will, fucking Bakunin was a determinist.

>fucking Bakunin was a determinist.
Really? I didn't even know he touched on the subject as a philosopher, I thought he was entirely a political philosopher.
I think this takes the cake:
"[In the middle ages] the physical origin of sperm, in men and in women, was also debated. The brain, the head in general, the body as a whole and the reproductive organs more specifically all had their supporters. The medieval mind liked to work by analogy, and the whiteness of the brain was likened to the whiteness of semen, the spinal cord providing a physiological link between these two substances. Both semen and breast milk were believed to derive from blood, undergoing a series of purifications during which they lost their colour....

Pliny the elder thought sperm that came from the right nut made boys while jizz from the left made girls
The Greek physician Galen thought baby bones were formed from semen.

EVERY MAN HIS OWN STYLO!
Are the Lowlanders overlooked in Scottish history despite being the majority of people? Why is that?
>>1255863
No. All famous Scots in history were lowlanders.
And in any case the populations of the Highlands and Lowlands were in fact roughly equal before 1715.

Why did middle-age Europe go full Dune when it came to spices?
Why was it so valued? Was there a gold rush for New World spices as well as those from Asia? What's was their deal?
>>1255754
Spices make food taste really good.
>>1255754
Spices, especially nutmeg, was valued as an anti plague amulet. It also made shitty, rotting meat and produce taste somewhat passable. Napoleon's Buttons has a very interesting chapter on the chemistry of spices and what made them coveted in Europe.
Status symbol, and taste, and food preservation.
This isn't isolated to spices, England got half of China addicted to heroin because they weren't getting their fucking tea.
Someone school me on the 5 Percent Nation.

That shit is for niggers.
>>1254848
You act as though freedom-haters aren't the vast majority of /his/ posters. Between the tankies on the left and the nazis on the right there aren't many people here tolerant of opposing beliefs.
The Marxists in India and the Sandanistas in Nicaragua tried it with meh results.

Yes.
But they got fucked by tyrannical regimes shortly afterwards. Whilst Leninist-style states don't seem to be the best at effectively implementing communist ideals, they sure seem to be the best at protecting communist ideals.

How is the CNT with its militias going around killing people any different from a Leninist regime?
Why doesn't anyone ever talk about this guy? Because he didn't kill a bunch of people in the pursuit of his Socialist ideals?
Bernie Sanders made this about him in the 1970s:

Why do American neckbeards, typically not of Greek or surrounding heritage, seem to have a heavy interest the Byzantine Empire?
I feel like the stereotype of them liking vikings is essentially over. Nowadays what I mainly see is them obsessing over Byzantium.
>>1251280
Because like the Byzantine Empire, we too will be overrun by Muslims. We must learn from the past to fight for our future.
Cause they can't be Catholic or Protestant because it's too mainstream, so they rebel by becoming Orthodox.

What you can learn from Byzantine? Being in debt and calling le helpful venetian merchant for a help?

Pic possibly related.

They don't exist. Pic is definitely unrelated.
