>Going down with the ship
I'm sure this thread has been on here before but let's have a discussion about the nature of war, starting with our personal preferences on the necessity and nature of war.
I'll start by saying that I dislike war as much as the next guy but believe that it is pretty much unavoidable. It's not an original idea or even really an opinion. Whether heated national or tribal emotions intoxicate a people to aggression, governments are blinded by greed, a nation is in need of resources that are inaccessible due to another's hostility or their own incompetence,...

OP here. Now, as far as the ethics of war are concerned, I have my ideals and I have my practicalities in terms of opinions. The hypothetical "I would run things [this way]" query.
Ideally, I would like to see battles fought with vigor for the preservation of life, and if given the power I would only deploy troops when the situation jeopardizes my people or a fellow people for whom I and my kin generally value and care. I wouldn't allow pillaging, raping, slaughtering of livestock, slaughter of civilians or other non-aggressors, or dismantling of infrastructure....

Last part:
Practically, I would prefer to have my wars fought using the power of experimentation, fundamentally. Any tactics that are not intended to incur casualties to non-aggressors (government officials not withstanding) and their property will undergo trials of use. The most consistently effective and versatile means will be absorbed and the military will be well equipped accordingly, of course all while minding budget and likelihood certain scenarios unfolding and other factors of efficiency. In this case,...

The pirates were actually freedom fighters and they respected and cherished women. They also were egalitarian and weren't racist unlike the bigoted empires of the day.

Who was the last "Great" man?
Was it Napoleon, or was it Hitler or even Stalin? I don't think there are any today.
>>1309137
I say Hitler.
>>1309137
It was unironically Bill Clinton
>Who was the last "Great" man?
What the fuck does that even mean
What are the biggest differences between Irish Catholic-Americans and typical Anglo-Americans?
One is spiritual and connected with their heritage in a positive way, the other is a race of materialist usurers.
>>1309009
There is almost no difference, besides christian denomination, but even that is now negligible. If there is any real difference it is because of geography.

Why did the Soviets invade Afghanistan? Why did they lose?
Because they suck
And are communist
Ok, apart from jokes, I found a good article that has some points
There was a lot of internal political instability in Afghanistan in 1978.
Soviet Union had a friendly relationship with some of the leaders in Afghanistan till then and wanted to strengthen their hands.
At the invitation of the then PM, Nur Mohammad Taraki, they entered Afghanistan in advisory role. The Afghan internal politics turned worse and several assassinations took place. USSR to participated in 1979.
Soviet troops got totally embroiled in Afghanistan's...

Strategic fault line between China, Persia and USSR.

They didn't really lose, the situation was the same as in Vietnam for the US. The allied government got overrun after they voluntarily pulled their army out.
Was the 95 Theses the finest example of shitposting in history?
a document that sparks a century of continental upheaval and religious discussion can hardly be called shit.
Whether you agree with the points or not, the thesis did result in the ultimate reform of all Christianity, whether in the form of the Protestant church or the Council of Trent and counter-reformation in the Catholic Church, the fact that Christianity was changed forever by Luther makes the 95 theses one of the more influential works in world history.
>>1308712
No. Shitposting is mindlessly posting contrarian garbage that you may not actually believe ornagree with, just to annoy other posters.
Luther genuinely believed in what he was doing.
No, that title belongs to your post.
Who had the best ships in the Late XV Century and late XVI Century?
I myself would go for the Portuguese Ships... I think that at this time, Portuguese had better ships than the Spanish, or Italian, and even the muslim nations.
What do you think about this? I am not an expert, so I might be wrong. But that's my opinion
No.
Larger doesn't mean better
Well, could that ship fight?
>>1308511
>chinese dickwaving
Both the ship and that picture really prove how insecure chinks are. And Columbus' ship was small for the time
