Why are so many in the humanities ignorant of economics?
It's embarrassing really.
Because economic is serious science of the level of math, physics and engineering and we all know that humanities hate STEM.

How France was able to get into The World War II victory club? United State used the most powerful weapon in History, sure. Great Britain fought until the end from the start. Soviets role in undeniable, just see how many Nazis died in Stalingrad battle or something... What the fuck France doing here?
Brownie points
de Gaulle was leader of the Resistance so he was leader of the Republic toward the end of the war when it was liberated and because the Resistance fought very very hard they got a special place with the big boys

How can a Jew, or anyone for that matter, justify God's existence and the necessity of evil after this? How do you witness people getting baked in ovens, their screams silenced by throats melting shut, skin sloughing like a serpent shedding and be scared of the Hell that awaits the disbelieving? You're in it already. Life is garbage, and no amount of love for God will change that. Is this a test? What is the question, oh Great Teacher? How long it takes to lose all hope in virtue? What are these Chosen People chosen for? To suffer above everyone else? Why pray? Why?...

I await the 500+ replies to this thread.
Faith helped many survive the camps and in turn go on to live fairly healthy lives. There's even been studies on this.
I'd say it was worth it since Jews finally returned to their promised land after 2000 years of wandering.
How come culturally, Britain seems so much more closer to ANZACS than Canadians? Same with emigration, there seems like theres tons of Brits with direct connections down under, but not out west. Is American dominance to blame over the north? Or were Brits simply never too interested in Canada?
Nobody likes Canadians

Australia and New Zealand were colonized much more recently than Canada

When Rome was a republic, would you say they were mostly centrist on a political chart or did they lean more toward the right?
I understand they had a very large government and that their state works extended to providing mail service, giving bread to the poor (ancient welfare), free water from public aqueducts, free sewage service, and public roads. Which makes them quite a left-wing society.
But on the other hand, they were also very right-wing, due to their large military, nationalism, and other things like that.
Would this make the Romans, essentially,...

Modern political classifications dont really work when applied to ancient cultures
>>1310039
One could argue Rome was a modern state of its time, they were so organized of a state that they could be considered a modern nation due to that alone.
>>1310056
They were an oligarchy of landed nobility

What can I do with my life if I stick with History as a career?
I know that many famous people have a degree in history, but they all ended up doing something else.
I love History, but I'm starting to get disillusioned. First of all, I don't get much human contact because I spend most of my time reading books and contributing to Wikipedia, so there's practically no way to make connections with important people except for other people who like history. Second, I don't have a clue about how I'm going to make a living once I'm done with...

>What can I do with my life if I stick with History as a career?
Teach/nothing.
One of my ex boyfriends studied a M. A. in History. Now he is running my hometown´s museum and published a book. You can do a lot of shit as long as you have some connections and concrete ideas about what you may want to do with your degree.

OP here. While arguing with a "friend" about History, I said the cliched line of "You need to know history to avoid making the same mistakes" but he countered with "What's the point of history when people will make the same mistakes over and over again no matter what."
What can I say to counter that?

Did conquerors/leaders like Napoleon, Julius Caesar and Alexander the Great really fight alongside their men? If so, was it in the rear and not without the help of some serious personal vanguards?
>>1311521
Alexander did. Expected of him by Macedonian Tradition, and by the Greeks as per "Arete" values.
AFAIK Julius Caesar personally participated in combat during the Siege of Alesia, where he dismounted, grabbed a sword and a white shield, and fought.
>>1311521
Napoleon in the Italian Campaign earned the respect of his soldiers and would be at the front with his men at times and would come out grimy with gun smoke at the end of battles. Also he would do things men of lesser rank would do in that campaign. He earned the name The Little Corporal from his men.
>>1311534
>>1311521
Addendum: Most of them did not fight the whole battle, but often led crucial moves or participated when the outcome is given. Most of the time they were commanding.
Julius Caesar, for example, in Alesia, fought during the attempted breach of Gallic relief forces through his siege lines. He donned his famous red cloak, and with his white shield and sword, fought alongside his men.
Julius Caesar is possibly responsible for he meme image of...

No. They've had 2 centuries to themselves with out Spanish or Portuguese interference. If anything it's America and Russia that screwed up most of Latin America during the Cold War.

We get it, you are on a scientific crusade to purge all religious belief.
Now, can we please accept that:
1)religion serves a certain need.
2)religion can promote both good and bad actions.
3)religion can carry on even without the belief in a personal god.
4)we must also be critical of science.
5)there is no demand need nor true possibility to have a consistent and single opinion about the nature of god or the meaning of the word.
OK? Can we move on now?
>>1308470
I agree.
>>1308470
As in move on towards discussion of these things without the obligatory "god is a fairytale!!", "stop living according to ancient myths of goat herders" etc...
