I notice a lot of stuff in happypanda is grayed out, are these WIP things that aren't done yet, or am I missing some option somewhere that makes them available?
In HappyPanda, when I have it set to move imported galleries to a different folder, and I go to Galleries > Add from directory/archive, it seems to be moving EVERYTHING in the directory to the new folder, not just the galleries it detected. It shows me a list that it says it skipped, but it didn't actually skip them, it moved them to the folder with everything else without adding a gallery for it, and I'm forced to manually search for them and remove them from the folder. Is this a bug, or intended behavior?

It displays your hentai collection and allows you to browse through it at your leisure.
You need a sadpanda account, some good image viewing software (I use HoneyView), and a separate folder for all your hentai. A torrent client is pretty necessary too.
Firstly, you need to find your User ID and Password Hash for exHentai. These are found within your ExHentai cookies. You can do this in Chrome quite easily by getting the EditThisCookie browser extension, and using it on an exH tab.
Then you need to copy paste that stuff into the Pandaviewer/Happypanda settings, as well as designating your hentai folder for it to look at.
Then you're basically good to go. Download stuff from sadpanda, chuck it in your hentai folder, make the viewer scan for galleries. They should show up in the gallery viewer and you can click on them to open them in your image viewer.
They can also collect metadata (tags, artist names, etc.), which lets you make use of the search function.
They're both good programs, it's mostly down to preference as to which one you use.
Pandaviewer is probably more accessible and easier to setup.
I prefer Happypanda, I think it's better for bigger collections (I have just over 4000 galleries). The random gallery button and being able to select favorites are totally amazing functions which Pandaviewer lacks.

In Happypanda if you specify a folder and enable folder monitoring, it'll automatically ask if you want to add the new file/folder.

It was definitely a consideration when designing PandaViewer. I decided against it mostly because of user preference and difficulty (I have no JS knowledge).

i was just about to look up some galleries on sadpanda, but wasn't logged in anymore for some reason. last time i was on there was just 2 days ago, i didn't delete my cookies or anything and i'm still logged into all my other accounts on various sites.
tried to login to e-hentai got an incorrect name / password error. so i figure maybe i used the wrong password but no luck with any of my usual ones.
i decided to check the member list to make sure i was using the correct username since i have two different ones for various stuff, and boom. nothing, apparently my several years old account just doesn't exist anymore. i have no idea what the fuck is going on.
normally i wouldn't really give a fuck and just make a new one, but it would be a damn shame to lose my favorites list since i don't have a backup and it'd take hours to piece it back together from my memory and recent browser history.

Just now implemented skipping existing files, effectively allowing "resuming" tasks.
This also allows you to remove corrupt files and have them redownload since files are checked in order as opposed to skipping to the last found.
Trying to hit the image limit now to check if the bandwidth code is functional.

HttpURLConnection codes are incomplete, the provided values don't include "509 Bandwidth Limit Exceeded". Weirder yet ex returns code "200 OK" anyway, and alternates between providing a GIF for exceeded and a message instead, yet to consistently reproduce.
Right now the condition to cover the GIF is easy enough, manual compare against the URL. Need to find the other message and write a case for that...probably?

Limit only triggers when starting the task queue, when actually processing tasks it's irrelevant since you'll hit the limit in a variable number of tasks (full images vs. regular images, html page loads etc.) so instead we react to 509.

Currently working on JSON API, meaning in theory a reduced impact on current image limit since we won't be wasting it on HTML requests, but instead be forming URLs manually through the API.
Downsides? Larger JAR, relatively speaking, and a dependency on the API.
Upsides? Less impact on ex, less impact on limit, less screwing around with regexes and access to metadata like tags... although I'm not sure what to do with that yet.

Also to actually remove links from the task list I need to edit the list.txt file instead of just pressing "Remove Task" as that doesn't remove the selected links at all. Right now filtering is performed by the check mark. This gets flagged when a gallery is no longer downloading, as a result of completion, interrupt or failure.
Then when searching for a new task, this check mark is observed.
Should be trivial to remove the condition that hides tasks and allow interrupted tasks to reset. A lot of stuff is test code so that's why there's such weird behavioural choices.

Ok is there a limit to Eze, because im trying to download an album that has 983 pictures, and whenever i get around halfway through i get a permission error. When i resume the download, it will get to 100% but when i download it i get a zip that says "failed - No File". Is there something i am doing wrong? Or should i use another program. I have used it for smaller albums and it has worked perfectly btw.

Your browser probably runs out of RAM or something. All files are temporarily stored there, so ~1000 files could easily give memory errors. It's also not really something that's avoidable unless you range download the gallery in parts.

It doesn't automatically save them when it completes. You have to click again to download it as a .zip file, after which you'll either be prompted for a download location, or it will save to your downloads folder.
If it does neither of these things, your browser may not have been able to allocate enough memory.

Downloading as a zip sounds incredibly risky for large galleries. You'll spend all your bandwidth quota then throw the data out if something goes wrong.
JS isn't really good for writing locally but there has to have been a consideration for batch processing every X images... right?

You're right, it is. And it's also hard to detect if something will go wrong.
The problem with "batch processing every X images" is that the memory allocation errors usually never occur until the final .zip file is created. And even then, if you want a .zip for every 100 images, it would have to pause, pop-up a dialogue to download the .zip, and then do some things to try and reclaim the memory (which might not even be even guaranteed to happen).
Maybe it could be made to create 100-file zips if a memory allocation fails, but I'm not certain this will work.
It works best for galleries with less than 200-300 images in my experience. If you need it for more, use range downloading.

No, you have to wait an uncertain period of time before gaining access as well now. Could be as little as a week. Could be months, but those people may just be doing it all wrong.

That's not how it works, rename them back. You convert them to zip with the help of an archiver tool.
I'm not sure if you've realized this yet but after doing the thing in the settings, you just try to import like you normally would with zip files but this time you'll be able to select rar/cbz files too.
If that doesn't happen, i suggest sending your log and explaining your issue to the developer. He's usually very fast to answer.

Don't get me wrong, I want to make use of pure API calls but I don't think it's even possible to do that.
According to the documentation you can't get much more than metadata through pure API.
Actual files require parsing out HTML to get keys, if you're going to need to do that you may as well toss the API out because you're saving yourself having embed a JSON parsing lib by doing so. I'd use either manual parse or API, mixing the two is asking for trouble.

In order to negotiate the CloudFlare protection, you need one of two things:

A JS engine, ideally in the form of a web browser. I wrote a workaround for it in C# by exploiting the provided WebBrowser WinForms control. By navigating to the target page we can then wait for redirect then query cookie values through a system call.
Once we have the cookie we can access the site as usual, if only getting it wasn't such a hassle.
It might be a little more sane, when implementing this functionality in other languages, to simply run a JS bookmarklet in an active browser session to extract the cookie string and manually feed it into the downloader. More sane than implementing browser emulation anyway.

Threw together a hitomi.la downloader real quick, based on old sources so it's pretty terrible. One of these days I might just abstract all these sources into generic tasks and throw it all into a unified UI, pretty sure there's some guy selling a tool that does this.

would it be possible to store the metadata info within the files themselves? Auto-fetching is not reliable at all and when it does work it usually doesn't add all the info (particularly tags), I don't like the idea of the database getting corrupted or something, forcing me to add everything up again and have to painstakingly add metadata to all my collection all over again

You are far more likely to corrupt a file doing that than a database.
It's possible, there is a comment EXIF tag and a comment field on archives that you can stuff data into.
Early versions of PandaViewer stored metadata in a file in the directory, but that was abandoned a while ago.

Happypanda detects deleted files while running. If you delete a file and Happypanda isn't running, it won't get deleted.
Ask the developer if he can make it look for deleted files on startup or something.

Out of frustration I deleted the folders to try again, I think I might know the problem actually, when updating I had not copied the old config file and just added my hash and all but I forgot to turn off the option to download sample files so it might be that whenever it got to a bad image (and when browsing you need to press "Click here if the image fails loading") it didn't actually do that and just downloaded nothing.
Now that I've turned that option back on it seems to download everything fine, no corrupt images

Hoping to get receive some help regarding happypanda: I can't add more than 1 image per manga. Doesn't matter which option I choose to add (Add single, Add galleries, Add directories/archives), the program only imports the first image in the directory.

May be removed or may not have been able to find it from the image has or name search.

The downloadable Ex metadata might solve a few of them. The only way that wouldn't be manually editing would be for the applications get metadata from other sources that mirror exhentai, such a chaika, hitomi, nhentai, etc etc. Or you doing that yourself.
Otherwise, no there isn't an easy way, unfortunately.

The files themselves contain only enough information to perform a reverse image search to find source.
Sites like iqdb can manage that. From here you might get a result from Gelbooru from which you can scrape tags.
Simple enough to set up but I'm not sure how iqdb feels about automation. It would also be a lot faster to use thumbnails.
It's worth noting that EX doesn't remove metadata from removed galleries, which means you can still get the data through the API. In PandaViewer you could enter the EX/GE url from Chaika and it would probably get metadata.
