Alright, とみみ庵 (Tomimi Retreat) released a new work today. Got my copy of the audio work and uploaded it into my MEGA folder. It is easier nowadays. Out of curiosity I looked up the rates the VAs are charging, which turns out to be ~3 JPY per character. Assuming that a typical work has 20k characters, and a VA can produce 20 works per year:
20000 * 3 JPY * 20/yr = 1200000 JPY/yr ~ 9950 USD/yr
That's a surprising low amount! I'd assumed that--especially for the more popular and established--the VAs are basically semi-pros. WalMart employees probably make more than that a year.
Another misconception I had was I expected that someone like Igasaki Ayakas's rate to be 5x ~ 10x that of a less popular VA, but it seems they all (admittedly my sample size is small) charge around the same rate.
Fun(?) fact: the VA Koiki takes Amazon gift certificates as payments, so unless there's a gift cert. -> currency exchange, this income is clearly supplementary only. Knowing this, my image of her went from a yuppie making a living with her unique talents, to a housewife making money on the side to supplement her allowance.
