Had some terrible luck with the Christmas Mikoko gacha. Took way too many tries to get on her square, but I got her eventually. I'm not that upset though since she's my favorite Crimson Girl. Getting an SSR version of her has been a goal since I started playing.
I'm a bit disappointed that she didn't make top 10 in the poll and her stats are a bit on the low side compared to my other SSR , but its not a big deal.

If you're familiar with the old "qtev" events where there's a separate map with 4 areas to walk through, the photo events are an evolution of that. All 4 areas are unlocked from the start. In one of them, you'll encounter the event girl more often. (Which one gets re-randomized whenever you fill 3 stars for an area.)
As you walk through the areas, you'll sometimes encounter the event girl, and can choose to take a photo with a regular camera (free), a wide-angle lens (better; costs fake money), or a disposable telephoto lens (best; loot from random-encounter boss). The photo will either be normal, good, or great, giving a corresponding amount of points. As you gain points, the event girl's arousal levels up and unlocks story scenes.
The other random encounter you can get is a boss who drops telephoto lenses and other loot. So far, this boss doesn't level up, making the event wholly gated on green energy.

On second thought, now that I read the news post, the odds of getting higher rares increases with each step, and you're limited to 6 steps per day using tokens, so I should try more per day if I have enough tokens.

It may have been profitable initially. That being said, I think a lot of the interest people had in the game simply arose from some of their favorite hentai characters being there. This sort of thing really dissipates after a while.

I figured the active player count was at least holding steady, since the "casual" line always seemed to be around rank 2500. The real money would be from the higher-ranked paying players though, which is harder for me to gauge. When I was splurging for the >>4194932 SSR, I hit a ceiling around rank 165 despite having a 4x point bonus, so there should've still been a couple hundred paying players.
There was also the election, where I free-played pretty hard to generate 700ish votes and ranked at 260, but the top ten girls each had 30-100k votes.

The majority of income usually comes from heavy gacha rollers which may or may not include high ranking players. I've seen games which I've known to be more profitable to close down just as abruptly so this isn't new to me.
The reason why I liked this game is because the occasional new arts, "animated" scenes, and less popular characters getting attention every now and then. I'm actually gonna miss this somewhat because of that.
It probably didn't draw much attention from new creative works since a lot of stuff was recycled.
Well hopefully someone rips all of the pictures and animation before it shuts down.
