There was a recent patch that added a playable sex party at the back of the porn shop in the capital and a quest to find and rescue some girl that is kept there as a slave by the church. The quest is stil incomplete, however.
The new quest is also translated already, so it's not abandoned.

The new quest isn't particularly new, I don't think any actual content has come out this year. It's still being translated though, as far as I can tell

From what I remember, the first few releases of VH were during 2008 and featured a more basic/ugly version of Nanako and a very small area to move around. Somewhere along the lines the devs had a disagreement over content with one guy who split off and is now working on the Katteban/Selfish version of VH which features more graphic content (namely guro), an even younger looking Serena and some different scenes.
The original dev(s) stuck around until Fall 2012, where they basically said "yep, uh...that'll be all" and left it entirely to the community. Some English speaking content creators were on /vg/ for a while but some people badmouthed them until they fucked off to Japanese dev boards.
Translations are still being done by a few people who were also in the /vg/ threads (I think it's over 90% at this point) and content IS periodically being added through the patches but a lot of people are afraid to do anything because of how disjointed, disorganized and full of spaghetti it all is.
So basically, you STILL can't reach the end of Nanako's journey to the credits screen or find Serena's damn heirloom after 8-ish years of development.
And that's what I can remember of VH.

Last I played the Katteban version a few months ago it still featured some older Tilesets and map navigation (most apparent while walking around the Capital area). Either version can be played through without debug, but you can't actually "beat" them due to incompleteness.
Using the debug tool to have some fun and see what you can do is probably the most preferred way to do things. It helps circumvent grinding, certain bugs and gets you to quest-related lewd faster if you tire of the generic game-overs and rapes.
All versions of VH are wonkily coded and more or less as buggy as one another, Katteban just has all the benefits (and detriments) of not depending on an unorganized mess of contributors but instead a single person.
[spoiler]Looking back at the regular game, it starting off with Nanako having some pretty simple goals dependent on player choice was probably a bit of prophesy; it's far easier to meet those goals than it is to wait forever[/spoiler]
...and the happy ending with Rin is still the best ending.

I think you have to have sex with Rin in the bed at night using one of the viagra combinations (you/her/both) for it to trigger.
The one that gave me problems was her masturbating on the 2F toilet but it seemed that one viagra combination for fucking Rin in her office was sufficient to unlock just about all the scenes bar the last in a timely manner.
Any clue why they opted for the new title-screen background?

A patch improving the innkeeper route was uploaded 9/26.
Seems like the translation is going down the final stretch. There's only two major areas that need translation left, the Orc Kingdom, and Eisen, there's a translator working on each area, and we just passed 91% of total lines completed.

I dunno. Serena's main programmer disappeared and the others are unwilling to take over for the most part.
Stallion seems to be in deep development mode, he redid the h-animation scheme so that heroine and sex partner are separate entities, greatly simplifying sprite creation. He still hangs around the developer forum, so I think he's still working on things.
