i have tons of free time + decent photoshop skill and experience so i figure why not? the question is where do i go to join a group?

There are a couple of threads already on /h/ where translators are posting scripts for assorted eromangas and doujinshi. Offering to do the editing for one of those scripts would be a good start.
If not, commission a translation script from a already established group. It's usually less than 1$ per page if it's just the script. This way you can also choose what to work on, which is always nice.
Once you have something to show for, contact a few groups (look for translated stuff on sadpanda and find their contact info) and inquire if they're hiring editors.
