made a logo for a client once
made a few mockups
she picked one asks for changes
i make them, still not happy
she keeps asking for new changes
"add this" "remove that"
spend too much time explaining why
some won't work
insistant
make changes atleast seven times
sit with the client, she completely
forgot the first mock ups
chooses one of them, no changes
>>
>first real client ever
>really old tech illiterate guy with thick Icelandic accent and hard of hearing
>really particular about the project and insists on being present while designing to dictate everything exactly
>I'm willingly getting ripped off on price because first client
>only have design desktop so he has to come over to my apartment
>spend several hours (a few sessions) with him very anal retentively designing really shitty looking graphics for teaching his personal life philosophy which he's developed for decades in a journal/binder
>not even something I want in my portfolio
>send him stuff to his email and he has problems finding it so he calls me up to ask me how to find it
>try to talk him through an email interface I'm not familiar with
>doesn't know what email he's using and doesn't even know how to login because he leaves it always logged in
>send it to him several times all caps subject and flag
>calls me again later telling me the colors and size of the file are wrong when he prints them
>next time we meet he shows me a printout of his email as it appears on screen with a thumbnail image from a printer that is obviously running out of ink
>he doesn't know how to download an attachment
>I have to struggle to teach him 95% of all computer knowledge needed to be a successful client
>maybe I don't want to be a graphic designer

We never actually got to finish his entire project. Thank God I had to move away and that was more or less the end of it.

During my on-campus internship the film dept asked us to make a poster for their film festival. We go through weeks of collaboration, iterations, critiques and finally had 5 samples for them to choose from. On the day they were supposed to come in and pick one our print guy finds out not only are they ditching but the department head's high school kid already made one. I think you can figure out which they used and which was the best of what we made.

One could argue that while the left looks brilliant, it might look too busy.
>>
>>272080
The left is very artistic, but has shit legibility.
Aesthetically the right is vomit inducing, but it conveys the information in a clear and legible manner.
>>
>>272080
left looks over-designed. lost sight of target audience. right is not very good, but at least reaches the target audience.
>>
>That website logo you designed anon? We need a 600dpi version! For to print!

OK, sure, only how big are you printing this?

>600dpi!

600 dots per inch, fine. Only how many inches? See, 10in @ 600dpi is way bigger than 1in @ 600dpi.

>Why can't you just send it 600dpi?!?

This goes on for a week. . . .

just do it in 600dpi, use the same dimensions from the original file, which probably was 72dpi

>>
>>272106
Left is pretty eye-catching but misses the point of psychedelic art. Text should be one color and spaced out a lot more. The multi-colored 'FILM FESTIVAL' line is just painful. Super-boxy graphics for the face feel weird against the flowy text and hair. Who the fuck needs negative space and a focal point.

Right is fine. I like the film strip but I feel I've seen it before.
>>
>>272080
Both are overdesigned and painful to read desu

>Follow up on a freelance lead from my college's career center. Send the potential client my contact info, website, etc.

>Receive this email, with all the other applicants CC'd:
Hello designers! Thank you all for responding to my job posting on the [REDACTED] website. As you know, I am in need of a logo for my new business. After looking through your portfolios, I've decided to hold a design contest instead of choosing just one of you. You are all very talented! If you are interested, please submit a design to me by September 29th. I will pay $100 to the winner!

>What the fuck.
>Send this to him:
Please don't treat artists and designers like this. Imagine if someone said "I'll see how I like your home-cleaning services compared to your competitors, and if I like it, I might pay the best one with an insultingly small percentage of what the work is valued."

You posted this as a freelance opportunity, not a competition, and it's insulting to ask for possibly struggling artists and designers to put the time and effort into a project that might not financially benefit them.

Please reconsider how you're going about this, and remember the golden rule.

>Include everyone who was CC'd
>About an hour later, get this:
Please disregard my previous email about the design contest. ...I can assure you that my intentions were not to deceive or exploit. I apologize to anyone that I offended.

>Not much later, receive wonderful validation from another one of the designers:
...I would like to thank [ME] for expressing his unhappiness with our client's disrespect for our profession and our abilities. I also wrote an email to [REDACTED] at some length expressing my disgust the night I received the original email. There will always be clients like this, who treat our professional skills like some sad hobby. It's our responsibility as designers and as professionals to respect ourselves enough to refuse these kinds of schemes. ...always remember that your time and skills are valuable!

>"Y'know what Client, i will be needing first part of the total in advance so i can continue, because...".
>>

I work with a lot of clients and that is not the issue, the problem here is that the client will never know about that cause most likely the original logo was not properly made or the previous designer didn't provide them with the files.

In tthis cases i offer to redraw the logo obviously for a price, Anon is losing a sales opportunity here.
>>
>>272650
You think my client would have ever even heard of .svg? At that point, I decided to say fuck it and their shit came out pixelated as all hell. I can't really even call them a client, it was a separate company sponsoring the event we were promoting (not the main sponsor, a shit tier sponsor), and their logo was going on the Thank You banner. I don't feel bad about it.

AnyBASED client stories in here? I had one recently, a logo job. The contract was for two initial concepts. We submitted them and they couldn't decide, so they bought them both and used the other one for their youth program. No revisions. Chances are, nothing will ever go that smoothly again in my career. It was like life on easy mode.

Fuck that noise. I'm not gonna waste time on a $300 job to vectorize some logo that was garbage in the first place when I have 3-4 original brand identity jobs at $5k+ a piece on deck. There are missed sales, and there are wastes of time.

Thanks. But please know that I am still working on my skills and writing applications. I am sure I will one day look back at this and lmao (ayyy) about how all of this came about and what a fucked up time it was.
We all fit in somewhere, I guess. And sometimes I think about how it hurt my creativity (my self esteem, to be precise) but mostly I'm over it and some of the situations are just funny and make for good stories. Why not at least have a laugh? That said:

>Japanese qt coworker passes my computer
>sees I am working on invites for the super important football match where all the executives are going to come
>boss is there to check what I did so far at the same exact time
>qt says "That looks amazing!" although we don't like each other that much (different story)
>Turn around and say "Wow, thanks, that's nice of you to s..."
>boss decides she won't have that
>Shouts at qt all of a sudden

>she has glasses
>mentioned she wanted to get new ones soon, from an online shop
>holds a box with the shop's logo on it in her hands
>I realize she doesn't even know about the company's own incentive programme
>Tell her she gets 20% off using that, even on the order she already placed
>She gets fucking furious and tells me she couldn't care less about those few bucks
>I merely mentioned it briefly and I cannot even begin to understand what the fuck is wrong with that, just shut up nevertheless
>She opens the package
>there's a coupon enclosed that saves her 5 Euros on her next order
>she's like "HELL YEAH, SWEET. 5 EUROS OFF, GUYS!" and shoves that thing in everyones' faces
>try to change subject because it feels so fucking awkward
>say I like one of the models she chose
>she tells me she doesn't need other peoples' opinions
>one second later
>she turns to another coworker
>"How do you think this one suits me?"
>mfw
>>
>>274106
Sounds like a total cunt. I think you are better off getting fired.
>>
>>274108
Definitely. Met a coworker after maybe six months. He had to do my job for about 3 weeks and he told me that he doesn't even have a clue how i could stand that for more than a month. He also told me that I should be glad.
I found it very amusing when he added how they often talked about my situation and how they felt very bad for me. Apparently, they had heard way more than I thought of what she said to me.
Too bad she knew when to shut her mouth and whom she needed to charm. She knew all the right people and is always like that but no complaint would ever change anything.
However, it was kind of hilarious to me that my struggling with her became a kind of office meme there.
