I just started a new job today as a designer for a large porn studio here in San Francisco. I'm tasked with updating the look of the website, as well as ebooks, DVD covers, video links etc.
I need your help; we all know graphics beyond a logo aren't porn companies' highest priority, take a look at pretty much any porno DVD cover ever. What sorts of things would help you enjoy visiting a porn site's official page more pleasant or DVD covers more enticing? Standardized sections for the actors credits? More thumbnails, less thumbnails? I've never worked in this field before but I'd like to try to make a good impression with my bosses. I'm not even sure if I'm asking you win/gd/ings the right questions... Thanks for any advice

I really like it when the logos and titles are covered in poorly-Photoshopped semen. More of that would be great, please.
Focus on the girls, that's what most of the guys care about.
For the DVD's Minimize all the crazy text. Simple clean text and good looking women. Let the photographer do most of the work. Not sure about the site, depends if they want aesthetics or functionality. Make sure you emphasize the money making aspect of the company prominently enough, the premium membership button a different color int he nav menu for example.
Are you a fast worker? If you are fast, then be prolific. Go like 3-4 different directions and then let your bosses pick which one they like. Don't go too fast though, because then you wont have any room to improve, you'll have set the pace too fast. Don't go too slow either, then you'll just look incompetent.

This is good advice I think, and I thank you. They want aesthetics now that they are using responsive design templates -- the current ones are minimal but not minimalistic if that makes sense. It's almost as if design was entirely nonexistent. It works perfectly but is just kinda blah.

Kink does have a pretty good website (and good videos dayum).
Things I'd recommend:
- large thumbnails
-video previews when hovering a thumbnail (really drives up clicks)
-black background + brand spot color is a must
-a powerful search engine if they let you design that
-bdsm-oriented websites are better slick and sober, general gay porn can afford to be more crass
-too many porn websites fail by being too sterile. Don't be afraid to be funny (motherless is a good example)
related note: anyone knows why there's so many people from SF on 4chan ? Is it the gayzness ?

Op here, I'm pretty familiar with a lot of porn, but recon has escaped me, somehow. Thanks to the guys that suggested design ideas, I'll ask if I can reveal the name of the site Tuesday morning. I'm thinking of doing a solo motif of the bottom (photoshopped the tops out so the user can imagine themselves as the top) with some simple line based graphics on a white feathered outline into a dark (black?) background. My font choices are nil, I have to use their pre existing suite, but I'm going to try maximizing the title of the dvd/scene and minimizing any other informational text for the people that care about that sort of thing (actors, location, brief description of scenario)

You know what I've always wanted OP? A search engine on a porn site where the videos are tagged and I can combine tags at will to create new niches. No website I've been to has this and I find better videos by backwards manual investigation. The regular search bar is to limiting, and one tag isn't enough. Even if it were string queries like "dog knees"+"floor tiles"+"abortion" type searches I would be happy.

I would just recommend starting off with your mobile design; I hate it when porn sites don't have good mobile sites.

this is my new goal, to have the site tagged to hell. one issue is that official sites rarely have good search engines and since i run away from the backend side, i dunno if it will be an easy implementation. why do the aggregator sites have better search protocol than the official webpages
