Anyone tried these? Are they as fragile/shitty as some people say? Should I get one or collect more dosh for something more durable? Is it literally Hindu poo tier in terms of image quality?

what VR headsets do you use?

You can get a cardboard one for $1+free shipping on Gearbest so go for it. Good way to try out VR.

“VR” is useless without 1:1 tracking. It's not the same thing.
>>

I bought my brother a "fancy" model (around $20) from chink shit site for use with an OPX. Obviously it's a toy but I was quite impressed with the immersion. I've read many articles on the oculus which made me think the lag would be the most critical issue, but the amount of lag was barely noticable for the basic stuff. I would guess real games would be unbearable to play with it, but for toy use it's fun.

I believe that almost all cardboard type devices use the same type of lenses. It's just the housing and moving parts that are different (so you can use them with different screen sizes, correct for shitty eyesight without glasses, change the distance between the eyes etc). Having tried the cardboard model though, it feels like shit. Use the cardboard for more than 5 minutes and it will hurt.

Would buy one, but my phone is 1080p and I heard that'll be nauseating or something
>>
>>54612646
i have 1080p phone, nexus 5x and it works fine

>>54612243
it's not bad, get yourself a headstrap because fuck holding it up to your face
i bought one for watching youtube since im too cheap to buy a decent monitor desu
>>
Op here gonna get one with headstrap that seems decent enough. Finally found a headset that isn't horribly overpriced. thanks for the replies

How much does resolution affect the experience?
>>
>>54612787
Not the same guy but in my experience 720p looks shitty to the point where it becomes annoying, full HD looks okay but you can still see individual pixels if you try.
>>
>>54612863

is it good enough for pron though
>>
Well I got one for 20€ and I gotta say I'm really disappointed in VR. Every app I tried was really unimmersive and I got bored right away. Now porn was better but all but one video I watched had an un-aligned view. Now I don't know if it's my fault since I can't look through a microscope with two eyes at once or is it shitty porn/headset.

>Well I got one for 20€ and I gotta say I'm really disappointed in VR.
This story is going to be the VR killer. Real VR right now pretty much means buying an HTC Vive, which is just too expensive for most people.

So instead people get the 20€ garbage thinking it will be even remotely similar, see how shitty it is, and then lose interest in VR.
>>
My problem is that my 2014 Moto X has a really shitty gyroscope or something, and it's too innacurate to actually stay still. Any VR content slowly drifts to the right.
>>
>>54613004

Well I at least expected that I would wear it for more than 10 minutes before throwing it in my hardware closet. My gf seemed to enjoy it a bit more tho.
>>
>>54612906
I haven't tried but I would guess based on other video that full HD would be good enough for porn.
>>
>>54612935
What model did you buy and what phone do you have?
>>
Using a vive because I'm not poor. Device is awesome, but lacks content. I've had a lot of fun using it as a 3d model viewer by importing video game assets into unreal. It's incredible being able to wall around and view life sized versions of video game models. Gonna try to create a waifu sim.
>>
>>54613226
Did you try porn with it?
>>
>>54613642

Not him, but I just got a Gear VR and the porn is the best thing I experienced in a long time
>>

Not even close, The resolution is tolerable but far from good even on Vive/Oculus CV1. I have a Vive myself

The display being so close to your eyes and magnified through a pair of lenses stretching the pixel density over a reasonably wide FoV make things much worse than looking at a 27" 1920x1080 monitor from an optimal distance of 0.5m~1 meter

Hell you only get 1080x1200 per eye which is even less than a 1080 monitor. VR works in a very different manner to a monitor since the image encompasses a significantly larger FoV and has to follow you head movement

To obtain similar quality to looking at a 1080 monitor at optimal distance you would probably require 4K per eye at least

I can easily notice the screen door if I look for it, but when I am not the image looks a little fuzzy and the Fresnel lens contour glare is annoying at times (usually scenes with sharp change in intensity like black background and bright text in a loading screen)

When looking at objects in the distance or details up close the resolution limitation becomes VERY apparent

This issue was very prominent in H3VR, aiming down the sights is not sharp enough and trying to look at fine engravings and markings on guns up close results in unintelligible blurry mess

The tracking is phenomenal though, only reason I haven't completely given up on it. I Still play it a bit every now and then mostly space pirate trainer, out of ammo, and H3VR's indoor shooting range (craving more guns, better 3D haptics for recoil simulation, gloves alongside controller for hand tracking, and higher resolution displays)

The biggest issue at the moment beside technical limitations is the lack of quality content. Still early days but it is a promising technology

Every time you put it on it is a commitment and massive hassle, the cable is annoying even after you get used to it

When this tech becomes so light small and simple to slip on and off like a pair of glasses then it will kick off

HOW THE FUCK DO YOU FIND ANY CONTENT FOR CARDBOARD??

I own a cardboard but there's nothing to watch except som shitty youtube 360 videos and you cant lay down because that makes you look up in the roof. There are also like 4 games for cardboard vr.

Fucking piece of shit. WHY IS THERE NO PORN?

Fug. Wishing my phone wasn't broken and cardboard wasn't in pieces now.

All I have is my shitty galaxy S which has 400*800 pixels, so porn looks like minecraft through the cardboard
>>
>>54615626
I did this

It takes an hour but it's something.
>>
>>54615703
What about besides porn? I assume something like a planetarium must exist
>>
>>54615626
pornhub uses it
>>
>>54615809
well don't feel bad, I tried that shit on vive with whirlgig and VR desktop and wasn't convinced.

So many shitty 180 and 360 videos, very few decent videos that I could get to a proper 1:1 scale. PoV SBS video sucks. Yet to try roomscale rendered porn with motion controllers.
>>
>>54615889
>I assume something like a planetarium must exist
Universe sandbox has VR support. With a vive that means you can have an entire solar system literally in your room, letting you walk around, touch and interact with the planets.
