Bought a laptop with Windows 8.1, and I wonder whether to upgrade to win10. 8's start screen search lags for seconds, the titlebars look like ass, full screen UWP apps is stupid. Is it worth it to just go for 10? Can I set it to not automatically install updates?

You don't need the slow bloatware of a start menu replacement, you just do what you did on 7, pin most used software on the taskbar or learn the new shortcuts so you never have to see the metru menu again.

You're already on windows, updates or no updates you're already sending some data to Microsoft if they want to spy on you they are probably already doing it. Windows 10 is a huge improvement to 8.1, it's basically 7 with a modern (hipstery) design, and it's dumbed down a lot which means you might have to click a few more buttons to change settings that are now seen as advanced for the people of the 21st century.
