Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

Although it is recommended to install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes", it is better to try the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a full Linux experience.

If you are serious about switching to Linux and if you have Windows dual-booted (recommended for pure newbies), use it exclusively for 2 weeks, avoid Windows dual booting for that period of time, or it's likely you will start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to Linux as your new home and working on making it feel the way you want it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R33sFFhgkWk

>Recommended for beginners:
-*buntus except vanilla Ubuntu (Unity)
-openSUSE
-LinuxMint (a.k.a Ubuntu LTS + Cinnamon)

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

I really don't get what's up with Xmodmap. I have the following for my laptop keyboard:

Which works nicely, but it doesn't work on my desktop's keyboard. When I change it to:
keycode 134 = Hyper_R
add Mod3 = Hyper_R

The entire thing shits itself and none of it works. Keycode 134 is originally Super_R.

Chroot is a trick to temporary switch / directory (top of filesystem) for some of your programs. This way you can run embedded linux in full-blown linux. For example, running debian in text mode inside android.

/var/jail/ is now / to the terminal you used chroot in.
>>

Yes you can login from tty, just disable your DM's service if you systemd. And set your .xinitrc accordingly.

Terminal and Console are the same, just call it what you want. But don't call it "command prompt".
>>

You can just use Ubuntu MATE, m8. Mint is ugly af.
>>

You don't really need one. Most distros are configured to use one by default to login, but you can turn that off by editing your init scripts. You then set it to start you at a terminal login, and from there, if you wanted a GUI session for something, you'd startx

You can actually run Xserver and connect to it Via VNC on localhost.

But don't expect being able to run Steam on it.

Also, you will need to root your phone.

There are tons of tutorials on both rooting and installing chrooted linux.

Sup, /g/.

I own an HD 1.5TB that was formatted in NTFS and decided to format it in XFS/GPT.

After formatting and mounting the partition, the system asks me to enter the root password to access it. Once I do that and try to paste any file into the unit, the paste option is disabled.

What the hell is going on? The same thing happens if I format to ext4. I use arch and xfce.

Where did you get that from? Updates take about 10mins for me on average on a core2duo and I can let them go while doing anything else i normally do. Why would it be unusable? Portage as a nice value variable you can use if it's a problem.

But how does any of that work? Say I open up an infected pdf in firefox. What can they do?
>>
>>51300886
any extra steps make attacks less likely
>>
>>51300905

Linux.Encoder.1 is executed on the victim’s Linux box after remote attackers leverage a flaw in the popular Magento content management system app. Once executed, the Trojan looks for the /home, /root and /var/lib/mysql folders and starts encrypting their contents. Just like Windows-based ransomware, it encrypts the contents of these files using AES (a symmetric key encryption algorithm), which provides enough strength and speed while keeping system resources usage to a minimum. The symmetric key is then encrypted with an asymmetric encryption algorithm (RSA) and is prepended to the file, along with the initialization vector used by AES.
Once the files have been encrypted, the Trojan attempts to also encrypt the contents of the root (/), skipping only critical system files, so the operating system will be able to boot up again.
At this point, it would be safe to assume that users can’t get their data back unless they pay the operators a fee in exchange for the RSA private key to decrypt the AES symmetric one. However, a major flaw in the way the Encoder Trojan is designed allowed Bitdefender researchers to recover the AES key without having to decrypt it with the RSA private key.

Mostly they encrypt your shit like other ransomware.

For a long time Linux used X11 as a display server. The guys that did it made wayland to replace it. It's not the main display server in use today because a lot of things have to be ported. Gnome, kde and others are working on it, and you can use it already.

A "kernel" is basically what sits right on top of the hardware. It's how your applications interface with the hardware.
What are you planning on using your system for?
>>
>>51301500
browsing the internet (literally only thing)

>>
>>51301421
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system.
>>
>>51301516
Nice.
I'd recommend you start with either Ubuntu/Linux Mint/ Kubuntu as your 1st linux distros.
Easy, simple and plenty of documentation and how-to's.

Check your hardware compatibility before trying anything, however.
>>
>>51301516
Well, if you're just browsing the internet, then there should be no problem.
Plus, if the 'tism strikes you, you can start fucking with your window manager.
