You will almost never be who your boss is now at your current job. You know why? Your boss has been there 20 years and has been manager forever, they're only 45 and they're not going anywhere. Even if they're going to retire soon they probably don't like you as much as Mike who's been there for 15 years and think about that, he pissed away 15 years of his life for a shitty incremental raise.

Always look elsewhere and higher.

Ultimately be yourself. That may sound paradoxical when you consider the average /g/ent but it is important. More important than some bullshit facade is the fact that your some real dude they're going to have in their office. Obviously though, you are in the end selling who you are and what you do. You're not there to tell them all your faults and why you have trouble with time management, you're there to tell them who you are, what you do and why you're good at it. This may sound like bullshit HR talk but it's for the most part pretty true, a manager usually gets an idea of if they're going to hire you on the spot. You shouldn't worry about the jobs you didn't get because honestly, you never had a fucking shot no matter how good you were. So focus on finding that job with that hiring manager you did get along with during the interview and locking yourself in that position.

Also, research the fuck out of the company. Know who's hiring you, know who your boss will be, who your boss' boss is, their achievements and accomplishments within the company. You can never know to much.

I've had to take a bunch of upper division classes outside my major, and it so happens that I've taken a bunch of them in CS b/c that's always been an interest of mine.

Do a side project or two to fill out your resumeme, otherwise an employer might think youve never done any actually work. If you discuss two interesting (even if you barely completed them) projects, youll look a lot better, because for all they know you only chose 2 of 100 to showcase.

The last project I was on I did most java, but got some freedom to choose and did some python when we needed a client for an API. My project just got cancelled, but I'll be working on probably either a nodejs or Java project soon.

There are a lot of startups in the area if thats what you are into, but Im not too familiar, again ive only lived and worked here for about 5 months. IBM is dying but there are so really good teams that are trying to keep up and stay alive (spoiler Im on one of them). Its such a big company that your mileage will vary greatly depending on where in the organization you fall. They pay well arent known to be bad to work for, just mismanaged in places and floundering in others. Redhat would be cool Im sure, avoid cisco. I prefer cafe culture over nightlife so I go out to cocao cinnamon a lot. At night Ive been to Bull McCabes a few times and theyre fun, some younger (Duke) crowds and great outdoor seating if the weather is nice

Sorry it took 4 hours, new season of Diablo 3 started

The team I'm on is 90% 20-something white males. That should tell you enough about why we dont use Java EE. I was only using Java because my direct team (product team has sub-teams) is an old fuck who probably cant program in any other language. The product itself was a microservice nodejs shitshow for running on BlueMix. The time I used python I just needed to make something to script access to a test server (that was the Java part). Mostly for fun, because it was such a small thing, and I knew I could knock it out fast in python wot with the requests package.

As for why they chose node for the product, its basically built to do what we needed it to do which is send and receive data to/from other services in the stack, and its super easy to do those kinds of async operations in node

Denmark, like 30km away from our 3rd largest city.

farmers are under attack because of pollution, even though we have the strictest laws, and the lowest numbers in europe.

What's crazy is they're having kids with only 4 months of "schooling" and 0 hands on IT experience get sec+, so the pass rates are kind of abysmal here (50%). They "prepare" you with a 9 day crash course, but I feel that it's one of those things that should really be accomplished on the job.

Yeahhh....sorry about that. Panama City passed some city ordinance against alcohol on beaches, so the spring break events have been creeping back West along the coastline. The black beach week shit thankfully only happens once a year; other than that that the niggers stay mostly in the inner cities.

>Anything you recommend I should do/see while I'm here?
Go see Ship Island, just to say that you've been. That fucking thing is an eyesore since Katrina and it (along with other barrier islands) traps sediment and other shit from the storm drains on the MS Coast. But people here refuse to fucking bulldoze/dynamite it and clear it away because its a "landmark".

Biloxi is kinda famous for the casinos, but don't go for the gambling. Waste of time and money. Try the booze and food instead. All the casinos and hotels have pretty nice restaurants (and buffets).

Speaking of food, try some barbecue from the Shed. It's near Biloxi. Good Tennessee style barbecue and also good blues music too.

If you like sports, there's plenty of Division 1 college baseball teams playing right now. Either in Hattiesburg, or in South Alabama or Louisiana.

The college girls will all be coming back home for summer in a few weeks, and believe me a fuckton of sorority girls in this state come from Biloxi & Gulfport. Godspeed, anon. Also try to fuck a Vietnamese girl, we have a ton on the coast.

Lastly, take a drive to New Orleans at some point. Best food in the Southeast and interesting culture/history.

Other than that, keep an eye out for summer festivals and shit.

Awesome. Yeah, I've noticed that all the water here is this shitty shade of grey/brown, and looking at the map it makes sense that ship and horn island would trap a lot of that filth in, also I heard that the Mississippi river dumps sediment into the bay.

Sadly, I'm not 21 and the AF will fucking destroy you for an underage, so the booze is on hold for a year. I've heard of the shed, I guess I ought to try it out, I really like music so that sounds cool.

Sorority girls, eh? It sucks being under 21, since I'm sure they'll all be at clubs and bars (not an option). Not really sure where else to find civillian girls, since all my friends meet their GFs at school.

>take a drive to New Orleans
Hell yeah, definitely doing this at some point. Also going to Pensacola. They've imposed a 25 mile travel radius on us but as long as you're back by curfew there's no way they'd know.

Thanks a lot anon, just trying to keep sane between classes here.

Congratulations, you've stumbled onto wisdom that 50+ year residents here cannot even fathom. The only things keeping Mississippi from having pristine beaches like Alabama and Florida are those fucking barrier islands. If you go out to Ship Island, on the far side, the beaches look like fucking Pensacola & Destin.

Has anyone done a co-op with Siemens or worked with them before? I got a call back for an interview, but I'm not sure if the environment is good, and all my classes and housing are set up for next semester already.
>>
>>54311803
Co-ops aren't long, you can get a feel for how a big company operates and no matter what having BigCo experience will look good on the resume and it will show you if you want to be there or elsewhere. I don't know how good you are but when I was in school I took the internships I could get I didn't have my pick based on culture.
>>
>>54312148
If it was an internship I'd definitely go for it, but co-ops are 6 months long.

>>54312265
The point of either is to get quality real world experience and test the waters to decide if things draw you or not, so don't select based on which employer lets you play rocket league the most.

I think you'll find that 6 months isn't really a lot of time, it only feels like that in college. The only reason I'd suggest against the Siemens co-op is if you found something at a place you want to get hired at eventually full time since internships are a good way to break into the company compared to other entry level applicants.

I have no experience...

questions for people employed as programmers:
when you are sitting at your desk how often are you:
writing new code?
debugging?
thinking how to tackle issue?
goofing off?
other?
(in percentages)
and how likely are you to be found slacking, or maybe accused of slacking?
is the boss hovering over your shoulder do they just give an assignment and deadline and let you be?
>>
>>54313737

they pay a lot because those positions are filled by people that studied very niche yet critical master's, or by other who've had several years of experience on the field and have naturally ended on those positions

with your fake degree you could get your job, but then after a few weeks you would find you can't do it, because you have very little to no experience on that niche subject, and there's little or no online tutorials/books related to the matter, eventually you would get fired and even blacklisted making it harder to get another job

so in order to reach those 80k+ positions, you start more general, on those more flexible 40k jobs that you can learn what to do from books or youtube videos, then naturally you find what your good at, for instance, you start as a programmer, and then realize you're good with website front-end development, or desktop application user experience analysis. Then after some time you get promoted to a more specialized position and earn money

Job Title: ""Network Engineer""
City/Area: Georgia
Yearly Salary (converted to USD): 11-12k? I haven't gotten the pay raise yet ($7.55 hr) and recently only got the promotion. I was doing call center support as a level 1 tech. Glad to be out of that shithole.

What do you actually do?: Monitor a website for ISP issues, then call and let the company know, as well as manage all the workstations. Additionally, use SSH to browse the company's various CMTS and DHCP logs to prove that a customer downloaded copyrighted material. It's interesting to see what people download. A bit ironic too as the top engineer there has an account on IPtorrents with 1TB+ upload and a seedbox. Sucks for those customers. During slow periods, I will browse the internet and watch some shows on a 2nd monitor. It can sometimes be pretty comfy.

how many hours/week?: 40h
