When of the drives in the RAID1 fails, the other one needs to pick up its IO load until the first disk can be replaced.
In this case, after the first disk died, the other disk (which was the same age as a disk that just kicked the bucket) suddenly had to do twice as much work.
It's not at all uncommon for the second drive in a RAID1 to fail shortly after the first one fails. There's more to it than just blind dice rolling.
