Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Is $300 for a T420 a steal? Saw it at a repair/resale shop while buying a spool of ethernet cable. Should I go check it out? I've never really gotten into laptops
>>
>>54236164
Probably not, where you from?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T420-14-Intel-Core-i7-2640m-2-80GHz-4GB-320GB-Windows-7-Pro-/201550818732?hash=item2eed5d6dac:g:XacAAOSwBnVW-Zii

Is only $220 and is pretty much as good as they get stock, without dropping a quadcore processer in there yourself. Only thing is it has an hdd rather than ssd, but for like $80 you can get a 250gb ssd.

I wouldn't pay $300 for a T420 unless it at least had an i7 and 1600x900 display.
>>
I have a Thinkpad T440p and I have various questions about modding it and repair

1. Should I invest into ADATA Premier Pre SP310 64GB mSATA SSD? Would it even be compatible? It's only 28 Eur

2. I bought one of those chinese HDD ultrabays for it but it's missing a bezel. How would I go around removing the original DVD-ROM bezel and placing it on the chinese piece of shit?

3. I had an accident with my TP and knocked out the question mark key out of the socket. One of the plastic clips on the key broke, but the key stays in place if I don't press it. Do I need a full keyboard replacement or can I just buy a standalone keycap for it from eBay? I was in official Lenovo repair centre and they said that I need a new keyboard for 120 Eur

4. If I have to replace the keyboard, will the US version of keyboard work on an EU model of the keyboard?

5. Can I use the trackpad from T450 on my T440p? Using the clickpad for a year now makes me wanna neck myself. It sucks so much.
>>
I found an X220 with an ultradock, i3 and 128GB SSD for like $250, and apparently you get an SL500 for free with it, should I get it?

Way overpriced, the hardware is more important than getting a free dock. Look for at least an i5.

Basically you're combining the amazing AFFS/Flexview 1600x1200 4:3 screen from the T60 with T61's newer hardware, most importantly the 64 bit CPU, higher RAM cap (8 instead of 3 GB) and SATA 2 speeds.

Does anyone know of a USB display adapters/video cards that support Dual-Link DVI at 2560x1440?

I'd rather go the USB video card route than a DisplayPort ==> Dual DVI for flexibility down the road. I need Dual Link DVI to support my 2560x1440 monitor.

I have a USB 3.0 card in my T420, BTW.
>>
anyone know how i can get a 1080 ips in my t420s?
>>
>>54238793
don't some of the docks for the t420 have dual DP, just get that and go DP-DVI, would be a much more elegant solution than USB video cards.
>>
>>54238870
>dual DP, just get that and go DP-DVI

The T420 already has a DisplayPort port on it, so I don't see how a "dual DisplayPort" dock would help.

The problem is that *active* DisplayPort ==> Dual Link DVI adapters are expensive and won't be useful for anything after this T420 expires.

Sadly, based on my searching, it looks like there is no USB "video card" that supports Dual-Link DVI for 2560x1600 output.

I'm starting to think my best long-term option is just to start shopping for a new monitor that takes more inputs. This Korean X-Star (Samsung panel) has been great, but it's been three years now and there's probably a better option on the market now.

well you said you want to keep the other DP port free for expansion which implies that you intend to have more than one screen so a dock with 2 DP ports would give you the future expansion you need. If you were willing to temporarily ditch the express card you could go with a cheap external gpu and adapter for that but i think at that point it might be cheaper to the the active adapter.

Has anyone seen this before?

I got a T420S last week, and have been having stability issues. I thought it was the keyboard, but I have since narrowed it down to the memory.

For whatever reason, it seems that it will not accept an 8GB module in the upper slot. An 8GB module works fine in the lower slot, but if I populate both it becomes unstable. I have tried both 1600 as well as 1333. Same thing happens with both speeds.

I just put two 4GB sticks of 1333 in and it is stable, so I am fairly confident that the upper slot is OK and not damaged in some way. I have updated the BIOS to the latest version.

Is there anything else I could try to get my 16GB? In a little while I am going to try 12GB, but I'd rather have the full 16.

Also, I did not know that the T420S is not a socketed CPU. It is actually soldered to the motherboard. Good thing I got an i7, just wish 16GB worked.
>>
>>54241761
I had a w520 and I personally loved it for work. Just runs a little hot but not enough to complain. The can be a little pricey compared to the T models.
>>
Explain this shit. You guys all said I'd have a trillion hours of battery life with this thing.
>>
>>54245318

Probably really worn battery. Brightness level? Tasks?
>>
>>54241761
Probably better off with a T520 if that's all you want to do. Although I couldn't find a T520 with a native 1080p display. So if the T520+1080p screen cost more than the W520, just get a W520.
>>
So, I have an x201 coming in the mail. i5, 4 GB of RAM that I'll upgrade to 8 GB, and a 320gb HDD. I need a Linux distro that will run well on it. I'm thinking of Fedora, Lubuntu, CentOS, and openSUSE. I'm only going to be doing note-taking, light programming, and shitposting.

9.5mm HDD, I need a caddy or adapter for a 7mm SSD right? Or is that the job of the silver drive caddy that already comes with Thinkpads?
>>
>>54249413
Just make a cardboard spacer. I will be find if you dont, but strain on the SATA connector and shit.
>>
>>54249413
Or am I a moron and overthinking the 2.5mm in height difference between the two?
>>
>>54249481
Thank you that's what I was looking for, I'll just through a piece of cardboard in there.
>>
>>54249413
Why not use an mSATA SSD?

Sure you're only going to be limited to SATA 2 speeds but my Windows still boots from POST to desktop in under 5 seconds anyway so it doesn't really matter if you aren't getting the full theoretical SSD speed. Even half of it will blow HDDs out of the water.
>>
>>54249502
you have more options if you go 2.5 inch drive. I would only ever go msata as a secondary drive.

Hey lads, how much better is the t520 FHD display over a t420's display? I hear it has a much better viewing angle. I know it's no IPS, but is it good enough for watching shit on?

How does it compare to an X1 Carbon screen (for example putting an X1C screen into a t420)?
>>
I think I broke the ethernet port on my x230. I'm almost certain I've used it before when I was setting the laptop up initially. In the interim, I've taken it fully apart for cleaning and I think I broke something. No lights when I plug a cable in, and tried another known working cable. Same behavior in Linux and Windows, triple checked BIOS options and it's enabled.

Fuck. I need a Rossmann.
>>
>>54249537
It's much better imo, higher res and better angles. It's a shame there's no 1080p T420. The T520 just a tad bit bigger than I want. T420 size would be ideal, but for now I just deal with it.
>>
>>54249942
Better than the stock t420 or better than the X1C drop-in screen too?

I can deal with 1600x900

Just picked up this beaut for £300. The think looks absolutely brand spanking new - can't see a mark on it. W510, i7QM, Nvidia FX880, 8GB RAM, 2TB HDD.

The only thing that concerns me is that it came with a 90W charger. Is that enough to power a Quad core Arrandale with a discrete Nvidia GPU? Surely I should have got a 135W charger for such a behemoth?

So which trackpoint is your preferred trackpoint. Mine is the Classic Dome due to the texture and size as it lets me move the pointer around quickly and accurately with very little effort.

The Soft Rim is up next due to the shape which lets my finger sit in it but it lacks grip, I think some grip tape or maybe even a bit of sand embedded in with superglue could solve that problem.

My least favourite is the Soft dome, I like the surface and wish that the Soft rim had the same texture but the convex shape I find less accurate than the other 2 and easier to slip off.

>>54255762
I prefer soft dome. Classic was faster but was starting to hurt my finger after a while.

Not a chance, it doesn't support mSATA.

If you really mean the miniPCI and not the Cardbus slot, you might get one of those MR15 cards (miniPCI to dual miniSD card) to work. It worked in my T60 anyway (never tried it before whitelist removal, so YMMV).

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B2CZ4XI/?tag=komponelektr-20

Best advice though, is to not stick things in holes that you don't need. They just drain power, which is going to be at a premium on a T42 if you're not chained to the wall.
