so here is situation:
I want to get a new desktop pc in 1-2 months and I already got everything down besides the damn graphic card.
my options are the 970 or the 980. the problem however is that in like 6-9months nvidia is going to release the new pascal.

Iam currently in a very bad situation, so I either buy the cheaper one and resell it in 6-9months to get the new generation or I just get a 980 and live it with for 2 or more years.

I dont know how they handle new releases like that, are they going to shit out a 1000$ card first and release 300-500$ ones later or do they release affordable ones from the start in like all price ranges.

What would you guys do in my situation.
>>
If not bait.

AMD 390
>>
>>51245873
no bait and no 290x, 290, 390 or whatever.
but this doesnt have to do with my problem, even if I would decide to get a 390 I would stand before the same problem that nvidia is going to release a new generation in 6+ months.
>>
I don't know where you're located, but I assume stores around you are into that whole "black Friday" thing.

So at least wait for that, since that's probably where chances are high you can buy a new card at a decent price.

Other than that, I can't really decide for you.

>in my situation
Do you already have a desktop computer for games?
Then wait.
No?
Get the 980 and live with it.

The reason I'm not upgrading right now is mostly because black Friday is just around the corner.
If I can't find a GTX 960 at a discount, I'll just wait for Pascal and see.
I've been playing not-so-intensive games on my 9600GT for years and years and it's only recently that I've been wanting to play things like GTA V that I've been limited.

Well, the graphics card is one thing, the game install takes up 60GB, I don't have that on my 120GB SSD.

So I'll be looking for a 500GB SSD and a GTX 960.
>>
>>51245931
Iam from germany so I dont have that black friday thingy.

I have a desktop pc atm for games but its really outdated.

It would help me a lot if I would know if nvidia is going to release the new pascal in all price ranges on release or just a expensive version first and like one year later affordable ones.
>>
>>51245841
lots of people are selling 290s for cheap, and even 1st hand ones are really cheap atm. buy one if you want something now

else, buy a 390 on black friday. the 970 and 980 aren't viable choices, jesus. the 970 should be way cheaper for what it offers, it's slower than the amd cards in its pricerange. if you want to get the 980, get the ti because the 980 is shitdicks compared to it.
>>
>>51245962
Seriously?
I'm in Denmark, and a lot of our stores have had various campaigns for the last couple of years.
>>
First they release the high end ones to bait the high end and upper middle nerds to upgrade; and also to serve as marketng for the mid tier cards

Then they gradually release the mid tier cards

Then they release the ultra high end cards hoping to make the whales upgrade again

Just get a 970 and upgrade when you can no longer live with it. You might b surprised
>>
If you're playing games at 1080p, just get the 970 since you seem obsessed with Nvidia and won't consider a 390 which is the better choice. The 980 would just be a waste, with Nvidia it's really top-tier (980ti) or bust. At 1080p the 970 will carry you for quite a while and you can upgrade after HBM2 becomes commonplace and doesn't require a massive price premium to own. Everyone is jazzed about Pascal but NGreedia isn't going to be handing out HBM2 cards for cheap, I guarantee you that.
>>
>>51246107
thanks
thats the information I was looking for.
could u give a rough estimate on how long they usually take before they release the mid tier cards(especially in tjhe 400-500€ range).
>>
>>51246133
Neger the 970 was €500 when it came out

You can see release dates in this table https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce_900_series#GeForce_900_.289xx.29_series

And there's similar tables on the pages for the previous series
>>

So if you bought a Pepsi and it was flat, you would never buy Pepsi again?

Good logic, yeah buy that 970. Enjoy selling it for $100, if that, in a year

I've had a bad experience with nvidia too, that won't stop me in the future to see what's better for the money. What was the bad experience with ati/amd? Both GPU companies are pure utter shit.

bro dont ever buy amd r9 390 theres literally no difference between 290 and 390 besides vram. and it doesnt affect game performance that much. id say gtx 970 because im an owner myself. MSI GTX 970 4G gaming and its just great.

So youre only interested in the apple of gpus?

its, sickening to be honest but this is /g/ and sucking apples dick is pretty commonplace.
>>
>>51247026

AMD is the apple of GPUs:

>subpar performance
>subpar overclockability
>subpar power efficiency
>unstable drivers, virtually nonexistant on linux
>higher price (gtx970s can be found for $250, AMD's equivalent is $330)

the only decent option is nvidia for the forseeable future, amd's 14nm gpus taped out nearly 6 months after nvidia so we'll see pascal in q2 2016 whereas arctic islands will be q1 2017 at a minimum.
>>

>>
>>51246127
Most of Pascal won't even have HBM2. Just like AMD, they're going to be using GDDR5X on the lower tier cards for next year. OP should just get a Fury X or 980 Ti (seahawk or hybrid), and use it for the next 3 years.
>>
>>51246133
that dudes full of shit, the last few cycles they have release their best mid-range cards (770/970 and 780/980) first, then an overpriced Titan, then the x80ti. They 1070/1080, the pascal cards you'll want, will almost assuredly be the first to market.
Unless your card absolutely can't run something you want to play (ARK, FO4, idk Memefront) I would just settle for playing on medium for like a few months and grab Pascal when it comes out. They are going to be a huge improvement going from 28nm to 16nm, as well as a slew of other improvements like 3d mem stacking.

Save your pennies, yeah you could buy a 970 now, and sell it for a loss when Pascal comes out, but I think you'll appreciate that $100 going into a better Pascal card
>>
>>51247047
290 and 290x are cheaper than 330$ and better than 970
>>
>>51245841
currently there is NO reason to get 970 (or 980).
390 is more powerful and has 2.285714285714286 times more memory. The only downside would be TDP, but if you have a good psu - this also shouldn't be a problem.

>>
>>51247255

you can't buy 200 series anymore, it's a moot point. AMD conceded their competitive status by getting rid of the $250 4gb 290. it was a great deal.
>>
>>51247269

the 970 outperforms the 390 and 390x once overclocked, most factory oc'ed 970s will come with a passable overclock for this as well. the 300 series only beats reference 970s.

>>
>>51248288

just wait for the $240 b-stock deal and use the saved money to buy fallout 4 (or just pirate it)

>>51248370

nothing wrong with that, but the 390 at the $330 price point is retarded when 970s go on sale for nearly $100 less all the time

i would choose the 390 if it was at the same price point nearly every time
>>
>>51248461
The 970 is about 30-40€ more expensive in the EU.

Makes no sense at all.
>>
>>51248551
>EU

a premium on a 970 in the eu isn't an issue at all given that electricity is 2-3x higher in price, you're definitely spending more by going with AMD

won't matter if AMD take 6 months to release their flagship like they did this time around, arctic islands has taped out significantly later than pascal did too which means we could see 9 months-1 year lag time from AMD next generation
>>
>>51248710
well id rather not buy a reference version of a brand new card straight away. if you buy a 970 now, sell it when decent pascal cards come out, im sure you will have enough saved up to split the difference

Id get the 970. I was in the same boat last month and decided on the 970 as itll run what i need until other cards come out.

Yeah, I don't really see that meme at all, they are always priced the same. The 290 of course is always the best valued GPU. The 390 is always the better by compared to the 970 within $20. The performance of the 390 will just get better as the 970 will get worse. The biggest cons of the 390 over the 970 is that it doesn't see huge overclocks, and uses 50watts more power on stock clocks.

Plz don't notice the reddit page.
>>
Is the EVGA GTX 960 4GB, 1.22Ghz a good deal at $199?

My boss needs a new desktop and I'm trying to put one together for him. He needs to be able to edit videos as quickly as possible, possibly 4k in the future.

Any tips or recommendations?
>>
>>51249002

the 390 is a terrible buy, unless amd undercuts the 970 by half it's price you're always getting less value as even reference 970s can overclock to 980 level of perf
>>
>>51249081

yes, but you should really shop around as there are cheaper 960s, 950 might be a good option as well, and you will need CUDA for any 4k editing.
