about $25 for 1990 mechanical with legit white alps. backslash key not working.

worth getting it? how hard fixing that one key would be?
>>
>>51194283
If it's just the switch that's broken, replacing it should be quite easy. You'll just have to take out the pcb and desolder the broken switch and solder in a new one.

I'm not sure where one finds alps nowadays, the easiest would probably be to take a switch from another key on the board.

If the flaw is in the PCB, then you probably can't repair it, though that seems unlikely since the adjacent switches probably wouldn't work either if that were the case.

I'd gut that board and build a new one out of it, but either way it's a good deal. Go for it.
>>
can someone post the pastebins and stuff that is usually in the op I would really like to do some basic research
>>
>>51194126
Just got a V60 with Matias QC. Why aren't those switches more popular, they are at least on par with Cherry-MX. Really love it so far. Not too loud, nice amount of feedback. They feel even crisper than MX-Green imo.
>>
>>51194951

The pastebins are pretty shit and terribly biased.

The best way to do research is to ger a switch tester.

There are quite a few numpad ones with a pcb so you can actually use it as a numpad too.

Get one of those, and choose whichever switch you prefer.

There is no such thing as a "gaming" switch or "typing" switch. If someone says there is, you can instantly disregard their comments.

It all comes down to personal preference.

Thoughts on the magicforce board on massdrop? I put in for a silver one with gat blues and white LEDs. Mostly just to compare to cherry blues which I currently use, but also because $65 shipped is a great deal.

Asked before to no avail. If I'm looking to build my own 60% keyboard, what PCB and controller should I look into getting? What are the best case solutions as well? I have access to a 3D printer, but I'd need to make sure it can print pieces large enough.
>>
Just got a mech keyboard for the first time. I got blues, and was told that they were decently tough to press, but honestly they seem easier to use than the membrane keyboards I've been using for 20 years. Kind of disappointed since I have meaty fingers and keep accidentally pressing keys. Should have gone with greens.
>>
>>51198972
I'm also looking to build a 60%.
You can get a custom pcb from the planck keyboard people. Check out their website, though I'm just going to do the wiring by hand since I don't want to go to the trouble of designing and paying for a pcb.

As for the controller, the teensy line of controllers seems to be prime choice. Just look at what others who made keyboards like the one you want to make used and go with that.
>>
>>51199246
Oh, I suppose you could wire up the matrix without a PCB. I just feel like it would make life a hell of a lot easier.
>>
>>51199273
I just checked the ortholinear keyboards site, and I actually don't see anything about custom pcbs. Must've had it wrong in my memory, sorry about that.

Isn't finding out how to do the matrix and wiring it and all that stuff half the fun? I'm damn looking forward to getting to work on this, I'm just missing a desoldering pump so I can actually harvest the switches from the original board.

God I'm hoping this thread is less toxic than /hpg/

What are your guys recent purchases?
Also what keycaps go well with a poker II on a black case?
>>
What switches would you guys personally suggest for mostly typing and casual gaming?
Anyone got any good resources for me or comparison list of all the relevant keyboards on the market? Complete noob here feel free to mock me but please point me in the right direction I'm having difficulty finding any information about these that are not glorified advertisements
>>

>>

Typewriterish.
Yes I do want aftermarket keycaps.
>>
>>51199945
Cherry MX blue if you are typing soft, green if you type heavy. White if you want it exotic (kinda clicky but not too much, but very heavy).
Brand doesn't matter that much. If you need Backlight take a look at ducky or something. I like KBP a lot. But anything that doesn't look like gaymen stuff and is too cheap should do the trick.
If you want it cheap take a look for some Kailh switches.

Alright, so I want to build a custom one with pic related layout (black keys are mouse buttons, red thingy is a trackpoint)
Thoughts? Improvements? Basically I just want a 65% one with a sane layout (the gap of the leopold 660m annoys me) and trackpoint/mouse functions and ISO.
Do I have to order a custum lasercut aluminium case? Or should I 3D Print one?
What about keycaps (my layout has an unconventional spacebar) ? Can I 3D print them too? or is the quality of these shit compared to PBT?
Also notice, I swapped out left shift with ISO's extra button, thoughts?
>>
grafitti wrist pads are kind of shit is there anything better?

>>
>>51194781
Massdrop had a drop for ALPS switches and keycaps recently. It did pretty well, so I'd imagine it'll come back.
>>
>>51199553
You wouldnt either if you have bought a decent board instead of this gaymer shit.
>>
>>51200816
Custom-cut acrylic from somewhere like ponoko would be the most economical choice, probably. You can generate the layers you need here: http://builder.swillkb.com/

There are some weird kinks in that layout that might be tricky to source keycaps for, I wouldn't 3D print them.
>>
>>51201256
I've got the switches already. I'm not sure if I should get ANSI keycaps and make it an ANSI board (that's what I'm used to) or make it an ISO (used that before switching to ANSI). The latter would be a whole lot easier and I would have PBT caps too.

Alright. So I bought a mechanical keyboard last Christmas. Don't get me wrong, I think it was definitely worth the money, since I program and generally type a lot and very often.

My question is, why any of this worth obsessing about after you've already bought one and are using it? I could care less about buying custom key caps at this point and otherwise modifying my keyboard, other than perhaps getting some blank ones to piss off other people who try to use my computer.

Not trying to attack here, just looking for some insight. Thanks.
>>
>>51207238
At second glance, only complaint I have about it is that a lot of the commentary is really subjective.
>>
>>51207239
Because you can't control your bottoming out. The chart is accurate. Just Google if you don't believe it.
>>
>>51207229

The switch descriptions are kinda bad.

IT makes browns sound like the ultimate in tactile switches.

And it makes it sound like blue switches are shit and undouble tappable.

Besides, switches are preference. The best way to decide on what switch you want is to buy a tester.
>>
mini keyboards make me sick, man i love my F keys and numpad
>>
>>51207316
I can understand doing away with numberpad. I don't like it, but I can understand.

F keys though? Holy shit, they are way to useful, I use them everyday!

Nav cluster is pretty useful too.

TKL is probably the smallest I would want to go for an everyday keyboard.
>>
>>51207284
I'm not saying the chart is wrong, I'm saying I don't understand why I'm getting fatigue from Topre switches at 45g but not Cherry at 45.
>>
>>51194126
I'm going full heathen mode here but someone talk to me about wireless mechanical keyboards. Where do I go for this stuff?
>>
>>51207472

Filco makes some good ones(Minila Air and Convertible 2).

There is also a wireless conversion for the HHKB Pro JP and Pro 2.
>>
>>51207251
Its nice to have nice stuff that you like
>>
>>51207472
Varmillo makes a bluetooth keyboard that is probably the best non custom out there.
>>
>>51207333
What F keys do you even use? I use F11 to fullscreen stuff, and one game I play uses F2 and F9. Other than that, I don't even know what function the other 10 serve (I know F1 is for help)
>>
>>51207757

F2 for renaming files.
F3 search.
F4 for closing stuff (Alt+F4), will also jump to address bar in edge.
F5 for browser refresh.
F6 jumps to address bar in Chrome (actually it cycles through elements).
F11 fullscreens the browser window.
F12 for Steam screenshots

And then many games use others for quicksave quick close.
>>
>>51207518
I guess. Just seems more like something you get and use rather than something to make a hobby out of.

You don't need the board holder, but a magnifying glass is a BIG help.

I like things which allow for a large amount of customization. I got a keyboard with clears, which feel very nice.

On top of this, I can slap on some nice PBT keycaps. If I want to, I could desolder the switches and build another keyboard with them. I could put other switches into this keyboard.

I can even build my own keyboard from scratch. Mechanical keyboards combine my enjoyment of tinkering with shit and a tool which I spend a lot of time using. It's fun.

bought cm storm xt with blues today, first mech i ever touched so i thought i can share my first impressions here for anyone that may be interested in getting into mechanical boards, keyboard feels very weird to me, experience is not exactly positive or negative, just different and weird, it feels still quite mushy, tho not nearly as much as my old rubber dome, keys feel too loose, looking at it now i think i should get greens but i live in poland and there is no boards with greens i found, let alone in ~$100 range, the tactile bump isn't very noticeable for me, i can feel it only when i'm trying to feel it and after all i read i thought the click will be louder, i can hear the keys bottoming more than actual click, but this could be due to me never using a mechanical keyboard and bottoming every keystroke i hit
>>
>>51215632

So I fell for the meme and bough this piece of shit on Tuesday.
I didn't really like the Browns. It felt different than rubber dome, but certainly not better. Moving around in CS:GO was awkward as fuck.
And today it started malfunctioning in game, I started moving at half the normal speed and stuttering as if the keyboard had 10 Hz polling rate or something.

So I'm returning it on Monday and I'm gonna get my money back. This was one of the three keyboards I could get here that has both backlight and tenkeyless layout. The others are CM Quickfire TK with Reds (but I don't trust CM anymore) and Ozone Strike Battle with Browns... Luckily the one I got broke immediately, so I can return it within 14 days (one of the good things about EU laws) without any explanation.
I have been using cheap rubber keyboards all my life and not even once has one of them broke unless damaged it somehow. So when I spend $150+ on a keyboard I expect it to be fucking flawless.

>>51221364
>buying the rapid-i instead of the rapid for $80

>>51221364
One, backlight? Pleb city.

Two, the price is not reflective of the quality control, so your notion that it should be flawless is, well, flawed.
>>
>>51221418
I'm not from US, so there is no such thing as $80 mech keyboard here. The CM keyboards are pretty much the cheapest here and they start at around $130.

One, backlight was the main reason I wanted a new keyboard. Everybody has different preferences. Being elitist about keyboards is pretty fucking sad m8.

Two, I never said that high price means high quality. There is plenty of overpriced crap. But my expectations are that if I pay high price, I get high quality product/service, otherwise I take my business elsewhere. However, You can feel free to pay out your ass for shit products.

Check this autist out. There's literally no difference between backlit boards and non backlit boards besides LEDs soldered on. Switches used are no different from each other, as is keycap compatibility (assuming both use the same switch type)
>>
>>51220393
Seems expensive, especially since it comes with ABS keycaps and not PBT. The micro USB goes into the keyboard, regular USB goes in the computer.

Still a pretty big negative for very little positive.

Besides, most people asking for their first mechanical CAN'T solder.
>>
>>51223799
So, basically no impact on performance to warrant it as a disadvantage.

At most the goy pays a bit more on the keyboard, which still gets him a functional mechanical keyboard with something extra that he wanted.

Typing this on a year old Shine 3 with only 2 ded LEDs
>>
>>51223857
>no impact on performance

Only two reasons to buy a backlit keyboard.

For looks, or because you can't touch type.

LEDs going out compromises both of these.

Or maybe because you want some rice and are willing to deal with the potential resoldering.

Also backlighting doesn't really do shit if you can already touch type, but why is there some restriction against buying backlit if you could?

You should just calm your autism, because it's like people who use backlit keyboards and blank keycaps don't exist

So....looks?

>and are willing to deal with the potential resoldering

I mean, if you want to constantly repair LEDs that drop like flies, more power to you.

But most people CAN'T solder, and are stuck with an ugly ass half lit board. Recommending backlit boards without pointing this out is kind of a dick thing to do.
>>

>But most people CAN'T solder, and are stuck with an ugly ass half lit board. Recommending backlit boards without pointing this out is kind of a dick thing to do.
Yes, their loss for not realizing LEDs tend to die, and how does this affect them from getting a functional mechanical keyboard?

All they lose is money, a couple ded LEDs over time and dignity of having ded LEDs. If someone asks for backlit board recommendations, don't be an ass and assume they can't touchtype or solder. For all we know they can touchtype and solder, just wanting looks, as you say.

Does anyone know where I can buy a set of UK layout keycaps for a Model M?
Mine has a German layout which triggers my autism and Unicomp/clickykeyboards.com only sell US caps.
>>
>>51227618
Cheapest I could find for a decent one was £40-45. Got it off reddit.com/r/mechmarket, there are lots of people selling and buying used boards and keycaps on there.
Also check out /r/ukhardwareswap.

I got a CM Storm TK, it's quite common at this price point. There's also the Steelsieries 7G with Blacks but it has average build quality (and blacks). Sometimes you can find a Corsair K65 (reds) as well.

I would reccomend trying out each switch type on a keyboard or at least on a switch tester first though.
