They're profiting from you but not giving you any of the money. If you had a Honus Wagner baseball card, and I bought it off you for all the change in my wallet when in reality it's worth millions, would you be angry? What about if I stole it from you but left a current baseball card in its place? That would be an upgrade, but surely it's not acceptable for me to force the upgrade on you, especially when it effectively means you lose a valuable asset which I then gain.

Someone at work thought they would be cute and do that.

They give you 4 days to schedule it once it's download.

If you wait more than 4 days, things get kind of odd. Like if he were to download it today, and wait until the 30th to schedule his installation, the latest date he could schedule would still be the 28th.

Nope.

I work for a city, and we have a single IT guy. One of my coworkers upgraded without the IT guy's permission.

The button to finish/schedule the upgrade was up for several months, and you can't minimize/close that window.

I could have undone it, but the IT guy has made it clear that "If [anon] do my job, the problem will be resolved," to my bosses.

Dude tried for 4 hours to get a program to work for our power plant, and wound up giving up. I had no experience with the software, or the hardware that the computer was supposed to connect to, and had everything up and running in 20 minutes.

I did it because it needed to be done, and my bosses asked me to. I never meant to step on anyone's toes, but now the dude feels threatened.

>>
>>54196767
Politics. Dude started off as an EMT for the city, then became a Fire fighter. Went for Chief, and when he didn't get it, he walked out on the job. Then he brown nosed his way into IT, and got the city to pay for it. Then he applied for City manager, didn't get it, but got the city to begin paying for another degree to train him for it. He just got his first subordinate in IT, who is paid minimum wage, and does pretty much all the work while he sucks up to the new City manager all day long. New City Manager is doing a horrible job, so it's pretty obvious he just wants to know the job and get a recommendation when the City Manager leaves or retires.

He has plans to run for the State Senate in a few years.

How do I know all this? My wife is his niece.
>>
>>54196789
Oh, and he's also the leader of all the Utilities (water, electric, trash and street department), despite never working a single day in his life. In the midst of a 3 year wage freeze, he was given a 20k/yr increase in his salary for taking on that position, on top of everything else he's doing. City Manager (the one he spends all day brown nosing) pushed the City Council into giving him the job and the raise.

And the reason I'm not running a newer Windows OS, is because it straight up refuses to install - it crashes a little after the install starts. I've tried Vista, 7 and 8.1, and the result was the same on each.

I've ran 7 before on this computer, when I had a dedicated ATI gpu, and it ran really good, so..why?

Why would a slightly weaker gpu cause those crashes?

For it to be libertarian, it would need to respect your right to privacy, which it most certainly does not.

Wtf is that shit? Do you really believe that libertarians are in charge? Thankfully, they aren't. Otherwise, resources would be quickly depleted, crucial ecosystems would be destroyed and global warming would result in extreme climates, which would result in the spread of severe infectious diseases, falling agricultural output, etc.
Under enough years of libertarian rule, the modern civilization would fall and we would resort back to primitivism.

>Libertarians allow for private property to be more important than privacy, as long as you consented for the privacy to be taken away when you.

Not true. Libertarians insist on informed consent. And MS doesn't, given its absurdly long terms and conditions written in legalese that a credit card company would be proud of.

Communism, on the other hand, doesn't give a shit about consent, informed or no, kind of like how M$ is pretty much willingly becoming a dog of the state in order to survive. Just because the dog doesn't have a leash around its neck doesn't mean that it doesn't have an owner.

At best, you could argue that its corporatist, which is anything but libertarian.

>Not true. Libertarians insist on informed consent. And MS doesn't

But you are consenting to all of the surveillance bullshit when you install Microsoft products, or when you use proprietary software/platforms.

A non-consensual choice is when you have no option to legally choose an alternative. Here, you can clearly chose an alternative. Use GNU/Linux software and OS, and replace the BIOS firmware you have with Libreboot.
>>
>>54199796
Once again, you seem to have missed the INFORMED part of "informed consent."

Having it download an OS UPGRADE as though it is a security update to your current OS, and then popping up a bubble that doesn't give you a clear way to opt out of the upgrade (there's no, "I don't want to upgrade" button) isn't what I would consider to be INFORMED consent.

Then their terms and conditions relies on you not reading/understanding it, because it is very long, and very complex.

Take a look at OP. Does he look like he gave his INFORMED consent?

Again, you can call it socialist. You can call it corporatist. I'm sure there are other things you can call it, as well. But it most certainly isn't libertarian.
>>

>socialist
>a private company operating in a largely poorly regulated capitalist economy with a small (compared to Europe) public sector

This has to be some kind of a joke, right? And socialism is an economic system. It has nothing to do with a private corporation (Microsoft) creating shit products (Windows 10).

>informed consent
>then their terms and conditions relies on you not reading/understanding it, because it is very long, and very complex.

But this is what informed consent is. No one is fucking forcing you to install Windows at gunpoint or a threat of being arrested. If you don't understand the information provided in the contract, don't fucking install it! No one is forcing you.

Things like this shit happen, though, not because there's a lack of informed consent - there's clearly an informed consent. What is lacking is proper regulation of the private sector. The state should force Microsoft not to do such shit.

>inb4 muhh but free markets

Both markets and the public sector are indispensable for proper development of the society and technology. Most of the technology used by Apple, for example, was developed by the public sector - aka the state (touch screens, GPS + satellites and space launch, the Internet, wireless protocols, etc.). The state can create lots of innovation by investing into research and development, and it had already done so in the past. And this is clearly true, since we're here, browsing the Internet - invented largely by the state.

>>
>>54199972
>The US is a poorly regulated capitalist economy
That's a joke, right? Spending as a percent of GDP is over 40%. In what way is that "capitalist?"

>But this is what informed consent is.
Informed consent is not downloading an OS upgrade as an update, giving you no clear option to opt out, and putting their terms and conditions in complex and confusing language.

An example of informed consent would be a notification telling you that you could upgrade your OS for free by going to [insert MS address], where, underneath the download link, there was a link to their terms and conditions, as well as their privacy policy, both of which would be clearly worded and easy to understand. Upon finishing the download of the upgrade, you would need to double click on the icon, which would launch an installer, which would tell you that this is an OS upgrade, and that if you install it, you will be subject to the terms and conditions of doing so (which would be listed again). Then, when you restart your computer (as opposed to M$ doing it FOR YOU), it would list the terms and conditions one more time (once again, in simple, easy to understand text), and say that if you do not agree, the OS upgrade will be cancelled, and you will be reverted back to your old OS.

Upon completing your upgrade, it will have an icon in the start menu for 30 days, titled, "How to roll back your OS," in the event you do not like the upgrade, or something no longer works.

I would not argue that somebody going through those steps would not have given their fully informed consent.
