Speaker thread?
Looking for suggestions, but speakers are sexy af so fucking post them too you fa/g/s
Anyway - Looking at a new set of speakers, i got some eh tier (they've served their purpose) Speakers, hand me down a while back, now that i have a job - it's upgrade time
Was debating Fluance SX6 v XL7S when i saw a boston acoustics CS 26 - Heard great shit about the SX6 - the XL7s came in to play when i noticed there's a front port - the CS26s came in out of a random site and search, they look sexy as hell (as the the XL7s in their own right)
it's going to be used for multipurpose - Vidya, Videos, Editing, Vinyl and Digital Music. I'd be using a Home theater system, but only using 2.1 config.
Is boston acoustics good? for the fluance, since i'm on a desk close to a wall would it be more beneficial to have Front ports? what affect does port position have on the sound
Compared to what i have, anything's better, but i'm not interested in buying another speaker for a long ass time

How much do you car about bass?
The sx-6 has good bass. But that's it.
Here would be my picks for under
200$
Polk monitor 45/40, dual 5 1/4 woofers under 50 hz they sound average though.
http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=N82E16882290269
Teac retro's. Good bass a little wonky highs. Has a real phase plug, excellent mids.
http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=9SIA1J73AW9655
Jbl arena 120s. Amazing desktop speakers. Great highs, mids, and bass. But it might be a little bass weak for some.
http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=9SIA1J72YT8484
Or you can get what I finally got after I returned about 8 speakers back to newegg.
Energy cb-10. My favorite. They have this amazing laid back smooth sound that is increadible. Everything in the midrange is better in the 5 1/2 version than the 6 1/2. But they may be bass light to some people.
http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=N82E16882269008
Energy cb-20. Also amazing speakers. More bass than the cb-10, but worse midrange.
http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=N82E16882269009
I seriously can't tell you how much I love the energy cb series. And just to let you know some of the tech featured in them the others don't have. Aluminum drivers with dampening poly applied to both sides, a diffuser for the tweeter, vented pole pieces, the spider is vented, the rubber surrounds are braced for linear travel, the voicecoil is as close as possible to the pole, the crossover is a very nice 2nd order with some kinda notch filter, and to top it off the drivers are mounted as close as possible in a 3/4" MDF box.
bought mackie cr3 (not for mixing mastering purpose) yesterday.
little too many bass kick, but it can be equalized, sound quality is still fucking great and that's the main purpose of good speakers. 100$
for something better I suggest you presonus eris pair. under 200$
or yamaha (with white speaker) 300+$
>>54145231
If you like those, you should look into the RC lineup from energy. Older models, but better builds and easy to get on clearance.
I was going to get some really fancy speakers and a nice amp to go with them.
I ended up getting a yamaha soundbar and I think it's fantastic.
>>54144524
right here, bro. Same designers as Ascend Acoustics.
http://www.wavecrestaudio.com/products/hvl-1-two-way-loudspeaker-pair
If you want bass, these are amazing for the price. Truly a full speaker.
http://philharmonicaudio.com/aa.html
If you really want sound, stay away from big-box brands.
>>54144524
>>54146686
I forgot to include comparison review between these two speakers that is really well done.
http://www.avsforum.com/forum/89-speakers/2096578-new-2015-affordable-accuracy-tower2-monitor2-philharmonic-audio.html
These are the best two speakers in the $200 price range that you can buy. They demolish Polk, Klipsch, Boston, etc. Personally, I'd get the Phil's. Dennis Murphy is really one of the best in the business.
Dennis Murphy
Is there a modern speaker roughly equivalent to the old Realistic Minimus 7s Radio Shack used to sell? I know they weren't the best in the grand scheme of things but for the price they were cheap, extremely solid, and very pleasant to listen to, especially considering how compact they were.
>>54144990
I do love my bass, but if somethings are a little weak on bass, my sub will gladly take over (It's not the best, but it's not bad - Pioneer, came with a home theater system)
>energy cb10
Damn, that sounds nice - a bit more than i'm willing to invest at this time though
Given your descriptions, i'll take in to consideration the JBLs
Also regarding the Teacs, What's a Phase Plug
>>54146686
Dude, holy shit, that's an excellent Price for that Freq. Response, and the sensitivity is pretty great too!. i may really really be looking in to those. The i wouldn't mind having a larger bass range, but i have a sub to back me up. and honestly i should really stop worrying cause anything's better than what i have

Why the f doesn't that frequency response graph go down to the usual 20Hz? As impressive as this graph may look why not show the response of the low frequencies (20-200Hz)? Looks like bullshit to me.
>>54151743
Forgot to attach the picture ...
>>54151743
Taking a guess here, correct me if I'm wrong.
I think it has to do with the fact that bass frequency response is highly dependent on placement and room characteristics, and that particular graphic is meant to show accurate mid-high frequency response of the speaker itself.
Fluance SX6
>>54151952
>I think it has to do with the fact that bass frequency response is highly dependent on placement and room characteristics
This got me thinking, my music rarely goes below 40/30Hz but if hiphop music has sub 30Hz content and no practical bass traps can control their decay times.. wouldn't it be best in your car then with the trunk open?
>>54152792

>>54146564
I've actually heard the RC line. I'd literally kill someone for a set of RC 70's
>>54146686
Big box speakers are fine. Jbl, energy, klipsch, ect all have historically made fantastic speakers. Although they don't have speakers as good as the ones you've listed in that price range.
>>54149031
That graph is smoothed pretty fucking hard. And you can actually pick a lot of the energy shit on sale right now. Since you love bass, Id get the cb20's. They will literally blow you the fuck out of your room with any kind of bass boost on.
>>54144524
what are some decent passive speakers for ~50$?
>>54153431
Fuck i realize now that i didn't specify, looking at the HVL-1's
>>54153294
I was just looking to get a second pair. Set on ebay for 350USD, but Chicagoland pickup only.
>>54153294
Save up or spend the extra for these. They're high end killers. They punch really high above their weight.

>>54151577
Where do you even place these things?
>>54154455
they're pa speakers
Why don't you own jbl lsr305 305's?
>>54151577
Yeeeeee
>>54155504
because i own speakers that are actually good lol
>>54153812
God damnit you lucky mofo. Hopefully I'll have a set one of these days.
>>54151577
Where 2 cop? And I was looking for decent wood case speakers, any recomendations?
>>54153980
I know there supposed to be good speakers. But the rc70's are also giant killers. Like literally they will blow away 99% of speakers regardless of the price.
>>54151577
>>54155535
>>54156513
why would you want pa speakers for listening to music presumably at your pc
>>54151755
Serious question: Couldn't you just get a 100% flat response by recording your speakers impulse response, then calculate the inverse of it (ifft(1./fft(response))) and applying that to every signal you feed it? Of course you can't remove distortion with this, but wouldn't that enhance the sound of the speakers?
>>54157043
Yes, with a calibration mic. You could even get quite close with parametric eq, tone generator and sine sweep.
>>54157453
Well, recording a sine sweep is exactly what you do when you record impulse responses. Anyway, I now feel like trying this one time.
>>54157497
I mean you listen to sine sweeps yourself to plot a eq curve to make it neutral or whatever your preferred target curve would be.
>>54157610
Right, but I got a calibration mic at home, so I might just as well record the whole thing.
The inversion of convolution is known to be a pretty badly conditioned problem, let's see how it turns out for this specific case. I tried to cancel reverberation like that once and boy the things I heard came from another dimension.
>>54144524
Port position doesnt affects your sound except for bass reflex speakers or speakers with incorporate acoustic maze but that's not what your looking for
>>54157704
Why not just work from frequency response instead?
Being that loud and quality seem to be fundamentally opposed, this is what I went for,
A few upgrades since but yeh.
>>54157864
The FIR-method also corrects the phase of the signal instead of just the amplitude. I'm also just interested in how it turns out.
>>54157864
Not him but, your room changes the response drastically, you really need an rta in situe.
Are krks a meme
>>54157918
No, I like the rp5, used to have them and traded up for some genelec.
i got microlab solo 7c for my livingroom (attached to NUC), pretty happy with em.
am i a pleb?
>>54157723
what the fuck is this about mate?
If I knew what on earth you were saying I'd strongly disagree.
>>54156776

The children should leave and let the big boys play
>>54158287
pa is terrible for home audio use
>>54158401
not terrible, it's a different experience.
really fucking loud for the fist pumpers
quality low level for the chin scratchers
it's all good.
>>54158401
If pa is terrible for home use, then why do diy audiophiles love to use pa drivers?
Alot of audiophiles love eminence drivers
>>54158333
I want to be deafened by that horn!
What's the best speakers I can get for 30 bucks
>>54158447
>Alot of audiophiles
Audiosnobs are one of the worst groups in humanity.
It is without a doubt, the most snake-oil ridden industry there is.
Don't take any opinion from a self proclaimed,"expert', without a grain of salt.
Regarding a PA system for home listening, I would imagine a fair bit of placebo effect is involved. Once you have purchased and dragged a PA system into your house, you'll convince yourself it sounds amazing.
>>54158447
because all audiophiles are retarded - fact.
Eminence drivers are pretty shit, you won't get a pure signal from any high volume speaker in doors, but most don't get pure signals even at low volume.
PA still sounds nice though, it's a different thing. and probably no shitter than any other system unless you fully treat the room and RTA test for reference monitors etc...
>>54158467
check goodwill
>>54158635
>eminence is pretty shit
>>54158752
don't know what your trying to say here, I didn't get the memo.
Try Beyma or Precision devices for good PA drivers.
Are these still the go to computer speakers?
>>54144524
What does this thread have to do with anime?
>>54159437
If you can afford them, and not something better.
Then yes, they're alright.
>>54159474
Yeah my price range is ~$150.
The only other speakers I've had were $30 Logitech speakers, so for me it'll probably be a huge upgrade.
Got a pair of RCF Ayra 5, had them since 2010 still going strong and sound great!
Why are Genelecs so sexual?
>>54159494
they're gonna blow your mind if you never owned an active monitor before, enjoy it.
>>54159597
because you've never used them,

What's a good interface for xlr speakers to a computer?
>>54160429
depends on the budget..
MOTU 828 are alright
balance or unbalanced xlr?
focusrite saphire are alright on the cheap, just convert 1/4" jacks to xlr it's easy enough.
>>54160547
Balanced xlr.
I'm new to speakers that don't just use a straight 3.5mm connection, so I'm still trying to figure all this stuff out.
>>54160605
just get a saphire with jack o/p, then convert, wouldn't worry too much about balanced i/p to speakers.
only really a problem if you have a lot of interference in a pro setup with very long cable runs.

Use something like this from ad/da to speaker.
