I'm not entirely sure, for me I like the tactile feel but mostly I want the keyboard to be silent so I'm leaning towards Cherry reds.
My BF says clears and I trust his judgement for now.

Not important, think they'd be neat but I don't look at my keyboard.
>Previous/current keyboards
I've only gone through a few keyboards, two of them have lasted me for 10 years each, though I've had to swap some more used keys around
I got a g17 LED keyboard at one point but it only lasted me 6 months before the wiring broke in it. I'd like to do wireless as I don't want that problem again and I like to move around with it.

1st for meme layouts are for autist
>>
just received a ducky zero w/ blues to replace my finally broken razer meme (also blues, last revision with genuine cherry switches)

The blues on the ducky are definitely more silent that the ones on the razer and have a pretty satisfying "tock", when bottoming out as opposed to a kind of rattle high pitched click on the razer.

So far I enjoy it

That said, the ducky zero literally has zero autist/meme/gamer features, I wonder why other companies haven't picked up that design and construction and made it a keyboard for normies.

I cut it apart with a dremel, now I'm breaking off the parts of it (works damn fucking well).

Then I'm going to put gateron switches in the plate.
Then I'm going to handwire everything to a teensy.
Then I'm going to put it all back in the original case.
Then I'll have a fully programmable memeforce.

A keyboard with hall effect switches.
>>
>>54007722
>some ancient keyboard that was once connected to something like this
Nope and nope. The keyboards on IBM02X were mechanical in ways you would find hard to credit.
Pressing a key operated a bell-crank which pulled a bar that tripped an interposer off its shelf. The interposer had a comb down its back which engaged with some (depending on the key-code) bails which, in turn, operate contacts. The interposers were interlocked by a tray of discs with enough slack space to allow only one interposer to drop at a time.
The keyboard mechanism was mechanically restored by a pair of electromagnets between keystrokes.
The most common complaint from the almost exclusively female operators was a slow keyboard. The operators were paid by the number of cards they punched in a shift so speed was money.
They were amazing people; they could read and punch in complex data whilst holding multiple conversations with fellow punchers.
>>
>>54008060
Not that one. It had a cable out the back that connected it to a 421 or somesuch.
Usually it'd be a 519. The 526 was strictly light-duty.

Did I fall for the mechanical keyboard meme or does the Quickfire XT with brown switches blow? The physical keys don't stick but their input does. It usually occurs while I'm playing a game and my character will keep running in one direction despite not having the key pressed or pressing on other movement keys.
>>
>>54009909
Does this happen while typing?
>>
>>54009938
I haven't experienced it yet at least. I only received the keyboard in the mail yesterday.
>>
Reminder there is less than 24hours left to fall for the Planck meme.

Enjoy burning you hands with a soldering iron, inhaling lead fumes, relearning how to type, and bricking a teensy for only $134.

Fall for the meme now, I know you will faggots.
>>
>>54009969
Doesn't sound like a keyboard problem, then.
>>
>>54010026
>teensy
Doesn't it come with the PCB?
>>
>>54010073
Yea the teensy is on the pcd, you still have to flash it to get custom layouts.

Its really funny that people are so hyped about the Planck, it will literally be a pain in the ass to learn. Plus going back and forth between a ortholinear layout and a stagered one is fun.

Anyways I'm shilling cause I fell for the meme, and I want others to also. Cause it's not a meme unless a lot of people do it. Otherwise I'm just retarded

>>
>>54010921
it's disguised as an informational chart but it's really just some anon's opinions. no switch is objectively bad, people just have to decide on their own. if i'm recommending a mech to a normie I'll usually tell them to get a brown because it is just universally well received, people have to work themselves into the heavier switches.
>>
>>54010717
Blue might be the default idea for mechanical due to the click. I got a quick fire cm keyboard with blues for like $60 I think. I wanted greens but I never tried them in person and at the time it was $110.

Browns are objectively the worst switch
>>
Opinions on unicomp keyboards? They own the rights to the ibm model m design and they are only $85 which is cheaper than og ones on ebay

browns are subjectively the worst switch to you. in my opinion, blacks are the worst.

I would assume the quality of the parts used is different. I know that the og IBM model M's made by IBM themselves were of better quality than the ones produced by lexmark. Lexmark used a different (cheaper) plastic, which resulted in a slightly "less-clicky" sound, and feel.
>>
>>54011112

Cases are much thinner, caps are thin QCless junk that need replacement. Other than that the switches and plates are still great.

That said, I'd still get a used M for 30-40 off ebay over a new Unicomp.
>>
>>54011112
They are not worth what they sell them for imo. Worse build quality than the originals and they still use the same shitty 2kro membrane sheets as well as old molds that are only getting worse.
When they start using better quality materials or get new molds and make up to date membrane sheets (switching to model f capacitive would be nice) will be the day I recommend them.

I've got wire here too, it's just that you need diodes for the matrix to prevent ghosting and enable NKRO.

I think filco has some wireless boards, or you can get one of those hideous wireless dongles. Most people around here don't care for wireless though. I just use a long cable when laying on my bed, works perfectly fine.

Will do! It'll be my first build but I'm pretty excited. Still trying to decide whether I want to do an opaque top with a white middle to act as a rgb diffuser or to use a transparent top. Plus whether or not to spring for the aluminum bottom.

You can add lighting?

Guys, help me with choosing a keyboard.
I am choosing between Leopold FC750R and Ducky One. Is one of them better than the other in terms of quality? Is there anything I need to know about them that is not obvious? Or maybe there is a better choice?
Also, what switches should I pick? I have been using blues on my razer keyboard for about 4 years and I like them but I hear a lot of people saying that browns are a better choice, especially if you are playing games with that keyboard.
Thanks, dudes.

Yeah, with the newest pcb you can put on an led strip fairly easily apparently.

I asked Zach if I could get more than one interrobang key, but he never responded. Been a while now, think I'm just going to settle on one. Maybe white.

I sent a message through their site and got a damn quick response yesterday.

>>54019188
Oops, double checked, apparently the strip was for the old pcb, it's 14 indivdual leds on the new one. Supposedly it's still easy though. And yeah I'm excited for it.

I've never posted about mine before because it happened recently. Mine blew just a week ago, three LEDs in the course of 2 days, then a day later the keyboard just stopped working. A single keypress generated like 20 presses for some unknown reason. Mailed the retailer I bought it from and they told me to return it so they can check it out. Otherwise a really nice keyboard!

Smooth but very clicky. Clickier than black space invaders even, they must've used buckets for lube.

if you're gonna go through the trouble of wiring it all, why not just make a pcb yourself? you can hook that up to your teensy if you don't want to mess with a controller yourself.

I'll learn how to design PCBs once I go into electrical engineering, but I currently don't have the time to learn how to design a PCB, design one and have it made. I already know how to hand-wire and it took the stuff two days to arrive at my doorstep, making the switch matrix took me four or so. I'd probably still be learning how to use PCB design software at this point.

I also bricked the PCB on this thing, hence I'm handwiring it. I'd feel stupid to use another PCB instead of using the chance to work my cable management. Not to mention that it's fun.
>>
>>54026145
>the columns don't look as elegant as rows of diodes
Should've bought a grid layout board, then.
>>
>>54026250
>bricked
And by that you mean you cut it into brick shapes?
>>
>>54026404
Yes, after having bricked it by tearing off a bunch of pads.
>>
>>54026431
Did you try to use a jumper wire to a trace?
>>
>>54026444
I did. I got some parts to work by hooking them up to other parts of the PCB, and so on. But other things still didn't work and more shit got fucked.

I concluded that it'd be easier to just handwire the thing than trying to somehow fix that mess I had made. I also found out that this thing doesn't have dip switches so I can't just set the control key to where capslock is. If I use a teensy I can make the layout like I want it and also mess around with the TMK firmware and FN layers. It was anyway about time that I'd learn about that.
