Welcome to /fg/lt/, or as I've recently taken to calling it, /fg+lt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

You can just put it in your .bashrc or .zshrc (or whatever rc you use for your shell), and then source that file. It should work in every new shell you open after that point.

source ~/.bashrc

This simply loads the file and "sources" it, so that all new things are loaded into your current shell. Otherwise you'd have to close your current shell and open a new one, which is inconvenient.

Update

I got it!

Been trying to get i3 and LXQt working.

i3 couldn't work, as some part of X seemed to be missing but that is just a theory as I really have no idea. So it became clear that that I needed an X display manager to launch it, or at least some package it used.

Check to see which one LXQt used as I planned to install parts of it anyway, keep it simple and lower the number of packages. Well I could not simply apt-get LXQt as it was not listed. Some said I could just add a few lines and pull it from the unstable lists, but didn't know what lines to add and I like stability. So I gave up for now and just install LXDE, which includes a X display manager.

With that installed all my parts just snapped together and started working, much like I suspected. Although I wish I knew why i3 didn't just work from the start.

Just thought I would get back with you guys give the support you gave. Also wounder if you could think of way it didn't work to start with.

Does i3 need X or something, as I started with the smallest number of packages I thought would work.
>>
>>53988027
When you are in your console, make a file ~/.xinitrc and put
exec i3

in it. Then run startx.
Post back whatever error you're getting.
>>
>>53987782

Can anyone tell me how I can open up a flash drive via command line? Trying to copy over some papers onto my new debian install and nothing is popping up anywhere.
It's a minimal install with no DE just openbox.
>>
>>53988066
Oh, I went through that already. But sincerely thanks.

It didn't recognized command "startx".
And the "exec" command seems to just forcefully logout the user or reset the system, not sure which but it clearly didn't work.

Got some good suggestions from here on how to fix it, but the solution assumed only one desktop environment was in use. Thus I eventually decided to just use a display manager, rather not as it adds more things to the setup but it seems to fix a number of problems.
>>
>>53988183
i don't know anything but i would go to terminal and go to root. from there navigate to /mnt maybe it is there?
>>
>>53988183
Check which device you need with
lsblk

It's usually something along the lines of /dev/sdb1. You can then mount it using
sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt

Replace /dev/sdb1 with whatever device you want. Replace /mnt with whatever location you want to mount it in.
When you're done, use
sudo umount /mnt

BEFORE removing the flash drive.
>>
>>53988185
>It didn't recognized command "startx"
What distro are you running? You might need to install something along the lines of xorg-startx.

>And the "exec" command seems to just forcefully logout the user
exec basically makes the shell execute that command, and remove itself from the equation. If you try to run
exec i3

by itself, it'll try to start i3, but will find there's no usable X instance for it, and thus exit. Because you used exec, the shell invoking it will exit along with i3, thus logging you out.

>the solution assumed only one desktop environment was in use
I have a small script to solve this "issue" if you don't use a login manager, but you should probably get i3 itself launching properly before looking in making your setup more advanced.
>>
>>53988185
>It didn't recognized command "startx".
install the xorg-init package (this solved the same issue for me on arch, may or may not work for you)

Debian 8.3 netinstall with the lowest number of packages to be declared "functional".

xorg-init package was one of the things I think LXDE's X display manger added, likely that was the part that was missing as I originally didn't have anything with X in my starting packages.

By the way, I got some people to use GNU/Linux in real life. The trick was not asking them to use it, instead wait until they ask.

When you say "dude, dont use windows its botnet", people will just rolleyes and continue, but they surely will ask you when it comes to things like "how can I browse secure" or "what is the best antivirus?". These are situations when people will listen.

What are your experiences?

Are there any advantages to using Wine over PlayOnLinux?

As far as I understand it, the latter is basically just a front end with nice config settings to the former. But I was curious

Any programs that are known to run absolutely horribly on either that I shouldn't even attempt?

For x32 apps use crossover it has the most popular windows apps run smooth as fuck - because it's paid and they generally optimize right away w/e people ask them to.

Hi /fglt/ - I want to consolidate some of the excess household paperwork I have lying around (and learn something I may be able to implement for small office clients) and am looking for a document management solution.

I have a lot of experience in a Windows environment with imaging/indexing applications and querying MSSQL, so I'm not afraid of digging in and learning MySQL or whatever else I need to know.

I want to be able to create my own categories and index information about the scanned documents in multiple fields. Local/network client access only is fine, doesn't have to be web-enabled.

Anybody have any experience with some free (beer or freedom) solutions? Personal- or enterprise-tier I don't mind, I'm just looking for a place to start. Right now I'm checking out LogicalDOC but I want to know if I'm overlooking anything easier/better.

I'm on GalliumOS (xubuntu optimized for Chromebook). know nothing about linux and I'm trying to install Skype and Steam.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Skype, trying to follow this. Type in the first command to enable multiarch, it just goes to the next line. I don't know if that's a problem or if it's just enabled.
Type in the second command, it also goes to the next line. Again, I don't know if it's a problem.
Third command to update and install just doesn't work. It doesn't find Skype, not when the commands are separate, not at all. When I do just apt-get update, there's a huge list of links that failed to fetch, either because they're not there (404) or the connection refused (443).

The same thing happens for Steam when trying to install the 32 bit files. What do I do?

What kind of "management"? If you just want a place to store you documents on so everyone can access them, you can use a simple OwnCloud solution (there's addons so you can edit them with multiple concurrent users as well), or just a simple samba setup and mount the network drives.
If you also want tagging, you might have to dig around some more or create your own.

The two first commands most likely worked fine. Generally, you'll get an error message if something fails.

>When I do just apt-get update, there's a huge list of links that failed to fetch, either because they're not there (404) or the connection refused (443).
And this here explains why it doesn't find Skype. The added repositories weren't found, so obviously whatever is supposed to be in them isn't available for installation.

As for what you can do, I'm tempted to just say "don't use the blight on the world that is Skype", but that's not particularly helpful. I gather there are Skype plugins for Empathy and Pidgin but I can't vouch for how well they work or if the even work with voice chat all. Never touched them.

Steam is in the standard Ubuntu repo it seems. You shouldn't have to do any fancy dances to install it.

Yeah, I really want searchable index fields. Set up document types and sub-types in drop-down menus, a date field, comments, etc. I'm trying to think flexible and long-term.

Hi freemans

I want to login using my fingerprint.

I'm using Debian Testing + Cinnamon. Also LightDM.

I followed this tutorial:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_enable_integrated_fingerprint_reader_with_fprint

but LightDM still requires me to type my username and password. What do I do?
>>
>>53992697
>LightDM
The tutorial you're following seems to assume GDM.

Incidentally, GDM and Gnome is what I use. Fingerprint authentication works without a hitch. I've no idea if LightDM supports it at all.
>>
>>53992780
It does, you need to use a different set of instructions. I did it at one point but then changed my mind.
>>
>>53992780
>>53992816
Got it working (the final part of the tutorial was to disable fingerprint login and I did it anyway without reading)

Thanks anyway guys

I don't know a lot about setting up web pages, but from a small amount of research and a couple of YT videos, it doesn't look that bad.

From a workflow perspective however, it doesn't look like it would facilitate quick scanning/importing/indexing new stuff. If it was "knowledge based" content and not edited that often I could see this being a really good solution.

I appreciate the suggestion though. I learned something today.

This is loosely related to GNU/Linux, but since I AM currently running Debian I'd figure I'd ask.

When dealing with very large image folders (let's say, your generic 4chan folder with no categorizations, dealing with thousands and thousands of images), what is the best way to arrange them so that they will load quickly when opened / file operations will carry out relatively quick?

I was wondering if separating them into folders with 500 images each would do the trick?

The drive they're on is EXT4, if that makes a difference.

No.

"Getting more deep into Linux" has nothing to do with your desktop environment or lack thereof

If you'd really prefer, you could switch to a less hand-holdy distro eventually. But don't rush it, just get a feel for things on Mint for a while and then take the plunge on something like Debian later perhaps - which is a nice compromise between accessibility and depth

Linux is the name of the kernel that Linus Torvalds developed starting in 1991. The operating system in which Linux is used is basically GNU with Linux added. To call the whole system “Linux” is confusing. Please call the complete system GNU/Linux, both to give the GNU Project credit and to distinguish the whole system from the kernel alone.
>>
>>53995914
I guess you're connecting things you shouldn't connect. Just because a nice riced desktop w/ a tiling wm is often used by those tripfragging moe posters at the other thread, doesn't mean a riced setup is a bad thing in general.
>>
>>53995914
meh, when you acquire a large set of preferred programs you find it easier and less clunky just install a wm and set things up with your liking, whereas with a full blown de you're stuck with some programs you can't uninstall without it wanting to uninstall the entire de.

Hm. Really? Directories with tens of thousands of files don't give you hickups when loading them on an HDD?

Yeah, I'd like to keep thumbnails on - which is why I was thinking on separating them on subdirectories of ~500 images each or something. Would that do or is that overkill?
>>
>>53996172
If directory sizes are an issue then you can divide it based on image number or file hash. I hear this improves speed for directories on the order of 1 million+ files.
My own largest directory is ~700 files. Speed is only an issue on encrypted volumes; it takes longer to process the metadata.

Technically speaking, are most modern Windows-only games going to be eventually runnable on Wine? If not, why not?

I basically find myself booting into my small Windows partition only to play The Witcher 3 or Rainbow Six Siege from time to time. If I could play those on Wine I'd be set to erase that partition.

>>53996810
this is honestly a little annoying, there's a reason we have a 'use google first' rule

de=desktop environment, what you look at while using your computer

ubuntu uses canonical's own unity de
kubuntu replaces unity with the KDE de and suite of apps
xubuntu replaces unity with the XFCE de
they're all the same underneath, they just have different skins
distros like arch and fedora are still linux but completely different than ubuntu, since they are run by different people and have completely different package management
>>
>>53996810
It is Ubuntu, but with a different type of desktop. There are many different types of desktops to choose from and plain Ubuntu defaults to one it made called "Unity". Xubuntu uses one called "XFCE" which is a more lightweight, simpler one, and Kubuntu uses KDE Plasma which is a more complex one that has a lot of customization options but is seen as "heavier" (uses more resources) than lightweight ones and in some cases even the Ubuntu default "Unity".

It's all up to personal preference which you use, but honestly if you're just starting out, go with plain Ubuntu since any instructions you find to help you out will likely reference what you need to do in Ubuntu's desktop instead of others.

tried all that. Calling '-e' with urxvt starts the term emu with whatever command is in quotes. On every urxvt startup I had to run xrdb to merge so I thought I might get an instance set up before I have a chance to do it manually.

My xinit rc cames with tests to merge xresources by default. I tried changing the userresources variable but nothing changed.

Well you told it to.
Since that snippet is in bashrc, it's run every time you spawn a non-login shell, be it interactive or not.
Your snippet calls urxvt twice and each of those calls bashrc and they call urxvt and so on, but it will be stuck with the first urxvt call obviously since it never ends.

xrdb -merge should be automatic via default Xsession scripts, so unless you have fucked something up, it should work.
In anycase you should put it in ~/.xsessionrc if you can't get it to work via systemwide scripts.

Now why the fuck are you even spawning a terminal emulator in .bashrc, which makes no sense and is circular by definition, is beyond me.
